Cooling Coats
Hi there we have a new puppy, and she will be an outdoor dog when she is a bit bigger. We have loads of cane toads on our property, and I am worried about her having a go at one. I was talking to a lady at work today, and she suggested getting a Zap training collar, and using this to train her to keep away from the toads. I have never used one of these before, and would like some opinions on whether you think this may work for us? thanks, Angela
persephone
Hmmm.. what I would suggest is leaving her in a secure netted/colourbond enclosure when you are not there with her . also, IMO If the pup is to be an outdoor dog , it should be started off outdoors .. so that being put outside after having your company and indoor comfort isn't a big shock. I will leave the training to others who have experience of cane toads ...but it would be a very special dog who, left alone in a yard did not once try and play with a toad ...and once may be all it takes to make her very very ill. ~*Shell*~
Personally I'd go and see a trainer. I'm sure someone in QLD would do the kind of training you're after. I wouldn't put an e-collar in anyone's hands without a reputable professional's help.

We live on acreage, with a big fenced area, so don't really want to restrict her to an enclosure. She is outside most of the time atm, but we are bringing her inside at night until she is a little bit bigger as she is a bit too small to leave out by herself at the moment. Will seek out the assistance of a trainer to see if we can do something about the toads.

fuzzy82
I wouldn't use an e-collar if you have no experience with them. I would contact a trainer and get them to do it for you, or at least show you how it's done. I would imagine it's no different to snake avoidance training.
