BJean
Has anyone experienced, or had to to treat a bitch with septicemia / peritonitis due to a retained puppy (now removed). What is the best antibiotic? (This is not in Australia so please dont ask / advise to take to the vet as obviously this would already be taking place ) It has been 7 days and the bitch is still alive - though very weak and is not eating. She is being given Flagyl. She also has 5 surviving puppies. Would Clamoxyl or Rilexine be better? Or do Clamoxyl, Rilexine and Flagyl all adversely affect appetite and cause vomiting? (I am waiting for vet in Aust to call but am also asking the Dol collective to see if others have treated a similar situation or if vet nurse can advise on ABs) Thank you Edited November 28, 2011 by lilli
SwaY
When my bitch was on Rilexine it caused vomiting (tiny) the first few days then she settled down.
Dame Aussie
I don't have any advice, sorry lilli, but I hope it all goes well.
stormie
Enrofloxacin (Baytril) (or any of the other fluoroquinolone antibiotics) with Clamoxyl would be my bosses choice and he'd probably also keep going with the Flagyl. Hope everything goes ok... Edited November 29, 2011 by stormie
Poodle Mum
Is there anyway you can give her some extra fluids? either subcutaneously or intra veinous?? to help her out if she is not eating well. Flush her out esp if she has had sepsis & boosting her hydration level may help the appetite. Good Luck.
BJean
Thank you she is on extra fluids but is not eating. When Ankara wakes up, we will try some of the suggestions.
