I am looking for news stories on dog attacks in Victoria since Ayen Chol and the resulting legislation.

These are the only two I've been able to find:

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/more-news/dogs-attack-and-kill-family-pets-at-attwood/story-fn7x8me2-1226204725723

http://www.news.com.au/top-stories/dog-mauls-tot-good-samaritan-in-burnside-attack-in-melbournes-west/story-e6frfkp9-1226197871647

Would love any more that exist.

There was another one in Reservior, a dog or dogs, broke through the adjoining neighbours fence and killed the neighbours dog.

Reservoir

One in Mooroolbark

Mooroolbark

Somewhere near Geelong

Geelong

eta There was also one in Glenroy, and supposedly another one in Cranbourne. There was from memory a few others as well. Sorry, can't find the articles at the moment.

All of these incidents could have been avoided.

Leema, I have added a few links to my above post, but if you are looking for more info, you can find links on some of the facebook pages if you do facebook.

Victims of Breed Specific Legislation Australia

I disagree with the 2010 Domestic Animals Amendment (Dangerous Dogs) Bill!

If you just do a search on facebook, the pages/groups should come up.

I don't understand the angle here? Aren't most of the attacks since poor little Ayen of the Bull x breed type only confirming attacks are still occuring by the breed types they are after? I think they look at it in a way if any dogs who attacked are of the Bull x Pitbull type, it would be one less if that dog didn't exist so in their eyes the BSL does work?

Not all of the attacks I linked are bully breeds.

My point is, despite changing legislation, attacks are still happening. It proves lack of reinforcement and the uselessness of BSL.

How many of the 6 attacks linked are Bully breed types may I ask?

The Government thrust behind the legislation is to make dog owners more accountable.

So while the attacks will still occur, owners face greater penalties. Thus the theory is that owners of dangerous dogs will surrender them, dangerous breeds will die out, eventually number of attacks will decrease etc.

It is too early to tell if the legislation is working or not.

(It probably isn't, but I'm just trying to present an objective viewpoint).

7th September 2011 - Mornington - staffy x attacks dog.

4th October 2011 - Glenroy - 'large white dog' attacks dog and man.

14th October 2011 - Werribee - Malamute attacks girl.

19th October 2011 - Resevoir - APBT attacks dog and man.

18th November 2011 - Burnside - bull terrier cross attacks child in pram.

24th November 2011 - Attwood - no breed/description mentioned - dog attacks dogs.

3/6 of the breeds are bully breeds.

The large white dog was 'believed to be a bull mastiff' (later in the article), but obviously, bull mastiffs don't come in white, so who knows. Possible 4/6.

The government changes to legislation only makes owners of 'dangerous dogs' (pit bulls and pit bull types) more accountable. There were no legislation changes for owners of joe-blow dog. Sadly.

The only reason I asked for these links is so I had some links for my blog. I make the statement "And, amongst this, dog bites are still happening in Victoria." with several words linked to reports on these attacks. I don't make a big deal about it, certainly not enough to warrant the discussion in the thread.

it was a labrador

http://www.heraldsun...2-1226135193336

i was bitten by a labrador last week when it went after my gsd puppy. as i was shielding him, the labrador bit my thigh - stitches and a tetanus shot later :(

would i protect my boy again?? absolutely!

Sorry you got bitten . . . did you report it?

Are you sure about breed id?

Can you guess the mix of breeds in these dogs? Which are Labrador Retriever mixes?

The Herald Sun article says the dog was thought to be a pit bull X . . . .not sure where you got Labrador.

K&P . . . my bad. I read wrong. The point holds. People mistake some mutts for Labradors, just as they mistake other mutts for APBT's. Rescue groups worsen the problem because Labs are probably the most adoptable of larger breeds, so they label many dogs as Lab-X who have no Lab in them. I breed Labs, and I scored worse on the 'spot the Labrador' test in link above [i got #3, #6, and #7 wrong]) than I've done on 'spot the pit bull' tests (which I usually do correctly).
