Self Portrait Photography

Over the last couple of weeks I've been enormously enjoying the challenges associated with self portrait photography. I have very little in the way of equipment (my new remote arrived just yesterday and has helped a lot!!) so there has been a lot of improvisation and learning.

Has anyone else had a go at taking self portraits? If so I'd love to hear your tips and see your photos :-).

Wow! Hopefully Terra will drop by. One every day, or one every week? I've now got hold of a tripod and that has helped a lot too - much easier than trying to balance the camera on books, window sills etc :-). Stop down really low to help with focus?

I *think* she's one a day, from memory.

And yep, stop down to help with focus. Probably manually focus on the spot you want and go from there. A remote would certainly help (I still haven't got around to buying one!).

I bought a really cheap remote off ebay (it cost under $10) and it works just fine :-). I've been using auto focus to get the focus right, then switching it to manual to hold the focus (otherwise when I use the remote, it tries to focus again). I love your pics Huga - have you done any self portraits?

I suck at them, so I barely have any

I think next year though, I will do 52 weeks of selfies, simply because I never exist in photos. I would like my boys to have some of me to look back on :) A friend of mine (also a photographer) is doing that project, but with each selfie, she gives advice to her boys. It's very cool.

They are fabulous!!! Maybe we should start a selfie thread for next year :-). I'm learning an enormous amount from my (somewhat poor) attempts.

haha I'm like you Huga and never in any photos.. and I hate being in photos anyway.

Definately manual focus is best.. I cheat often and have something in the photo with me and take the photo that way.

Here's two I did during a workshop earlier in the year. Probably the last photos I have been in!!

Oh I only just saw this.

Yeah, I was doing one per day but had to stop if I wanted to pass my degree  Priorities!

My tips -- I actually did the whole year without a remote! Mine died and I never bothered to get a new one. So it is doable with a timer, but there's lots of running back and forth and finding something as your focus point when you're setting up the shot. A tripod is a MUST though.

Here are a few of mine...
