I first posted on JPS surgery on the 23rd of March 2008 and I regularly receive emails from DOLers asking me about the surgery, and which vets are pushing it. I had another yesterday and it got me to thinking about how often JPS questions arise and should we not provide answers here where all can see?

Most of my mails is from anxious breeders who receive calls from their puppy buyers who have been offered the surgery when taking their puppy for their 2nd vaccinations so I have been wondering if this would be a good subject to be pinned?

What do others think? And if it was pinned where to put it -Breeders Community - Health and Nutrition - Puppy Problems?

I took my BC puppy in for his 12 week vacc and my vet mentioned how he had just become qualified to do Pennhip xrays and was getting into doing some sort of preventative surgery for HD, I'm guessing this is it. Even tho I don't have a large/giant breed he wanted to know if I was interested especially since my dog is going to be doing agility. No thank you

Hopefully it's pinned somewhere!

I went through this last year when I got my Toller girl, I made a thread here about it when I got home. Very shocking that they were pressuring me into getting her done even though she is from a smaller lighter breed, and they knew she is my future foundation bitch and sporting dog! He also said she would have severe HD by the time she was 12 months. Big call for a vet with no experience in assessing hips and a puppy that isn't showing any clinical signs.

Just had her hip and elbow xrays done and I had the vet (Dr. R. Ferguson) give me a quick rundown and he said she had excellent hips and he was disgusted that vets are recommending this surgery for puppies, can't wait too get her proper scores.....thinking of taking the results in and showing my former vet but doubt it will stop him from pressuring other unsuspecting people!

ETA: Here it is!

tollersowned > Great to hear that your girl has been xrayed and by the sounds of it an excellent result. These vets who are extolling the value of JPS surgery are only interested in lining their own pockets they have no consideration for the dogs at all>> I would NEVER use a vet that even offers this procedure. I have no idea just how they even manage to keep their clients because if I was given that kind of spiel I would depart and not even allow the vet to vaccinate any dog of mine .

I have also posted this in the Breeders Community as there was not much activity with the post here, so why don't you check the responses there? I think in order for pinning it would need a little bit more activity.

Yes, that's what I did, I've never been back except to get the dogs history and I told them why they just lost a client of nearly 10 years and all the prospective ones I usually refer too them.

I've read the other thread, but can't contribute yet :( Still having trouble thinking of a good prefix!
