Susan Garrett Recallers

Nice posts Kavik!

I realised that my behaviour needs to be a more consistent signal to get a consistent behaviour from my dog. So far we're not doing too well with RZ on the right - at the beginning she wouldn't even let me stand next to her on her LHS/my RHS - but at least now I can move myself into the position and she won't jump away. We're doing a little bit of reinforcement every day, just upping it.

Ziva came into season just before Day 1 and I'm finding she's got a lot less drive and is more subdued - but still happy to work :)

Week one review for us:

- I need to work on having more fun during the games rather than making sure I'm doing them right... I think more enthusiasm from me will create more enthusiasm from my dog

- We need to get out and play the games in different environments, rather than just around the house. Hopefully the rain goes away so we can go down to the oval

- We are doing well with the RZ game, so I think I can now be stricter and only reward when she is right next to my leg, not 20cm away (and crooked!). Last night we played RZ while moving at slow, normal and fast pace which was quite successful. Left side is still miles better than the right side

- We have made a good start on Crate Games, but I've had to slow it down and am just giving her treats for sitting in the crate with the door open. We do a few repetitions of the door open - treat - door close, but after about 5 treats she's looking to escape. Also need to work on not letting her escape the crate!

- Push Back n Jam was lots of fun, but again, we need to go and play this on the oval

- I actually think her recall is getting better... it's not always as fast or as enthusiastic as I'd like, but she does come when called more consistently in more distracting environments

Things to work on:

- More enthusiasm!

- Crate Games

- Need to be less lazy, play the games more often and in different environments

We had a GREAT morning this morning. Instead of going down to the park we went on our 'bush walk'. It is through a series of tracks that run through a big area of bushland. Most people let their dogs wander off lead (I don't trust my 3 not to rev each other up too much so they are on lead.) so it is really good for distraction training.

Instead of just walking the 4 or so km's through the bush we stopped 4 time and played the hand touch game and push back and jam on the bush tracks. It was really good fun to have the dogs working in a very different enviroment.

Wikki is continuing to improve (and is the focus of doing the course), but CK is just amazing. I've seen a MASSIVE improvement in him. Tugging like a demon in an enviroment that in the past has been cause for a total lack of focus and more than a little fear at times. :)

Loving this!!

 Sounds great. I've still been slack about actually getting stuff done - 6 more work days till summer holidays, so look out then dogs  ) - but we have been playing round the edges a bit - some of the games we've played before. Can't wait till I get time to work through systematically and take it on the road.

Push back and jam is my favourite! We already played something very similar, so he braces against my hand when he knows that is what we are doing - I can't push him back very far

Have decided to really get into the hand touches and use them in the advanced way of then giving permission for environmental reward when we get there.

  • 2 weeks later...

I signed up for Puppy Peaks right from the start. I've found it really good from a practical point of view - having the chance to study SG's mechanics, seeing in real life some of the stuff she talks about that I didn't fully understand, seeing the way she picks up early issues and tackles them head on before they become big issues etc. I've also picked up some good ideas on training, and seeing someone like SG having a bad training session and recovering is good too in a refreshing kind of way - shows that no matter how good a trainer you are, you can still have an ordinary training session - it's how you set out to improve it that counts. Even little things like her critiquing herself on each video has been good - great for critiquing my own training.

I'd love to have a puppy to train to take full advantage - my plan is to go through and take some fairly detailed notes on each week so I don't lose it all when we all lose access at the end. I've love a permanent record of the whole video series but that's not likely.

Im loving the course. I initially tried to do it with my two dogs but have decided to focus on the youngster and then, start the big boy on it at a later date. The thing i love about the course is that you get to keep the resources for reference after its all done so i can utilise it after it all closes.

I cant believe the amout of focus im getting already. Its not really consistant at the moment but it is a HUGE improvement on what we started with. i can get a fairly decent amount of focus in many different environments now which im stoked with :)

Favourite game so far is the tug, sit, take off. My girl goes NUTS for it. Its definately improved our tug too.

Im also thinking of doing puppy peaks. I think it would be benificial to watch how susan deals with problems as they arise. Thats the biggest thing i struggle with. I only see issues once they are issues, rather than having the ability to see the starts of problems. I figure, you only live once and its not often we get the chance to see someone of her ability training behind the scenes.

have others who are on puppy peaks found it useful and interesting?

I am starting the course Jan 1 - because I was away overseas and have never done crate games I had a lot of catching up! Luckily I signed up for the level that allows me access until May so I have plenty of time to use all the info.

I went to play this morning's 'smoked ya' game and had to stop. I had 3 dogs squealing with delight!! 6:30am is a little too early for that methinks! Will get back to it later in the day and put two of them away as well!

I'm so jealous! I really wanted to sign up to Recallers but was without internet access when the notifcations for 3.0 hit my inbox! I got my access back just in time to see that I had missed the closing time by 24 hours  . Have just signed up to Puppy Peaks instead (something I have thought of doing for months :o ). Will have to wait untill next time for Recallers, but look forward to hearing from you all on how you find it.

Well today I was playing crate games and I slammed the door of the Vari Kennel by accident - now Toby won't accept food treats in the crate :( Getting a wire crate tomorrow to see if that fixes the problem for now.

I have been playing PB&J heaps with Toby and it is such a huge upper for him!!!! It's insane how much he pushes off my hand!

Awesome. If he loves that wait until you play hide n seek II! We are playing it around a shipping container and I've never seen Wikki run so hard.

I'm very surprised at how good the course it after being initially very sceptical.

Tried the new one Game of Deke today and was surprised how well we did  I am able to do this one with tugging too! Hide N Seek II went well as well - was surprised as he just stands there looking like I am mad with Hide N Seek I lol.

When you start with the wire crate, try putting it in a different location to where you slammed the door of the other one, if that makes sense.

I had a 'poisoned crate' incident with my BC when she was around 5 months of age, so I changed crates and worked the crate games outside for a few weeks - that fixed the issue I was having.

Changing the picture is really important after you have an 'accident'. I would also go back to just doing some desensitising with the vari kennel, feeding near it, for looking at it, feeding with one hand with dog standing near it while you make noise with the door, etc.

Just read it - looks like lots of fun!! We'll do that tonight.

Did anyone do the field trip?

I really wanted to do the field trip, but the only people I found on my walk was a family with small children, and while Kaos is good with kids he can get a bit excited as I have two little ones, and I didn't think the parents would appreciate me coming up to ask for help with my dog when they were looking after the kids. I will try another time when I find someone who isn't so busy looking after little ones  I have asked random people to help with recalls before with my GSD - thought I was a bit mad but hey at least they weren't scared of him
