I came across this website about a "Members Only" off-leash dog park ... basically you apply for a membership, pay your yearly subscription ($25 or $35) and you get a swipe card to access the park.

Do you think this is a good idea? Would you use something like this?

Hmmmn, just had a look at the site. I think it's a great idea but I don't know how many people would sign up, not to mention issues with vandals because at the end of the day the fence is low enough to climb.

Shame there are no trees, and it's just one big open space.

Responsible pet owners who are sick of the morons who frequent the off leash parks would be keen I would think.

And YES I would use one!

Hi, I certainly would use one - they have similar "members only" dog parks in the US - you have to pass a test before you can become a member and most have small and larger dog areas. One I saw had a lake and lovely rolling park grounds and it's own coffee shop!! It also had an area for training. Oh to be able to have some of these - membership was much larger than the $25-$35 that you saw, but I certainly would pay extra for piece of mind.

I would pay to use a nice area with trees and an interesting landscape rather than leftover bits of wasteland that they don't know what else to do with like most dog parks I have been to.

I'd use one if one was nearby. Would definitley attract more responsible owners than parks that anyone can use. I'd certainly be happy to pay membership if I had a more dog park-friendly dog. (Don't think her recall's quite there!) Trees would make it nicer, and provide shade.

I can't figure out, is this private? or something the shire created?

It would be good to see shires following this model, as it's going to be hard for private people to acquire a few acres of land in settled areas, and most people won't want to drive 20 km to get to the dog park.

I would definitely use it. And I like the 'no more than 2 dogs per person' rule. Even if one has perfect voice control, one can't keep an eye on 4 dogs all the time, particularly if they are playing.

There is this dog walker who comes to the local dog park with four dogs, including a Great Dane cross. Then proceeds to a bench and focuses on her phone :mad At least this would keep people like that away.

Yes I would use one.

I haven't been there but isn't Keppala in Vic similar?

Kepala is great!

They have a few different fenced off runs, in either sand or grass and one with a pool.

Basically you pay a certain amount to have your dog/s in there. Totally private and fantastic, you can also use the runs for meetings with other people.

I'm not sure if that's how this place works though... it seems to just be a park that people have to register for, which is a good idea, but just because the rules say dogs need to be under control doesn't mean they will be, I don't like using any type of public park as I can't trust that other owners have the same interpretation of "under control" as I do. That's why I use Kepala.

You just pay for membership? Does the dog/owners have to require to do some sort of test to get a membership?

Anyone who has a dog can fork out money for membership to use a private park doesn't mean they are responsible dog owners, therefore, people will have the same issues with dog fights, human fights etc, owners who have no control of their dogs.
