BJean
Two questions: 1) What is the tablets or charcoal (?) that you give dogs if they bloat? 2) Do bloating dogs have flatulence?
Red Fox
De-gas tablets from memory. You can buy them from the supermarket but I'm not sure on the dosage..? Hope all is okay? **eta, found the dosage in another thread 1 tablet per 10 kilos of dog if they bloat. If you do a search on "bloat" or "degas" there is some more info. Vehs
When my dog was bloating - on the way to the emergency vet he was letting out a bit of gas, I don't think I've ever been so excited to see a fart He still had to have emergency surgery though
stone
Bloat isn't merely gas in the stomach. Bloat is when the stomach twists, it is fatal if not diagnosed quickly & surgically remedied.

Kajtek
Charcoal is a good remedy for 'garden-variety' stomach upsets. It absorbs toxins in the digestive system. Not sure if it helps with bloat
SwaY
Bloat isn't merely gas in the stomach. Bloat is when the stomach twists, it is fatal if not diagnosed quickly & surgically remedied. Actually.. Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus ("GDV"), commonly called Bloat which can Gastric Dilatation - Bloating we see is the stomach filling full of gas/foam/liquid. Volvulus - It is the twisting that kills. Bloat can occur with or without "volvulus" (twisting)

Hope all is okay? **eta, found the dosage in another thread 1 tablet per 10 kilos of dog if they bloat. I have questioned the dosage weight, the packet says 1-2 per for an Adult. Many adults weight more then most of the dogs that bloat, 1 per 10kg seems excessive. 70kg Dane would need 7 tablets, yet a human of the same weight would only need 1-2 tablets. Also remember is the stomach has twisted you can not get tablets down nor tube them.
SwaY
I haven't heard of this, how does a dog get bloat? Is it food related? There is no 100% reason as to what causes bloat, some say it can be caused by.. Some say raised food bowls, others say eating at ground level. Some stay stressed and nervous dogs, others say dogs that are male, some say dry food, others say a dog that runs around before or after it's eaten. They there are ones who say it runs in lines, after a dog has had a mating, heat, kennel and the list goes on... They has been a few survey's yet no solid proof of anything, the reason for bloat seems to change every few years.
SwaY
Always keep a product with simethicone on hand (Degas) I think there maybe other products on the market that contain it as well? Bloat is life and death, know the signs and don't mess around with it.

BJean
Sorry I didn't get a chance to reply - took another look at his stomach and rushed to the vet instead. Previously: Dog had emergency surgery to alleviate life threatening severe gastric dilation; gastropexy performed at time of surgery. Time frame 22 hours. This morning: Mild-Moderate Gastric Dilation. No signs of shock. Time frame 8 hours. Contributing factors: Dry food, stressed environment. # 1 factor: familial predisposition. SwaY
Good video showing a dog bloating - the dog is fine. This video shows a dog in the middle to late middle stages of bloat. This dog, Roscoe, was saved. He had just arrived in a new home. The weather was warm but not hot, actually quite pleasant as this video was being filmed. Neither the person who brought the dog to this foster home nor the foster home had ever seen bloat and had no idea of what they were seeing. As soon as they realized something was wrong, he was rushed to the emergency vet. Youtube

Stone, lilli is familiar with bloat and the cause/consequences I think she is asking specifically about the charcoal and flatulence for her own reason Yes, thanks MBS. His stomach was really big and he had that I'm a big black cow look, but I noticed he had flatulence when I brought him inside. The most likely scenario was that he had been bloating all night, and then started to pass some of it himself ... (last time of feeding was 1am) Brasi is home and all okay now Edited November 21, 2011 by lilli
