SparkyTansy
*Affectionate *gentle *Intelligent *biddable *friendly with family & friends My two breeds have some but not all these traits. Weis are affectionate, intelligent and biddable and love people they know. English setters are affectionate, gentle, occasionally intelligent (in a different way perhaps) and friendly with everyone. Little Catdog
Name five attributes that comprise your ideal dog type. Which breed/s of dog do you have and do they hold these? If not, which breed of dog would you like to have to fulfill this ideal? Hello, The Norwegian Elkhound (Elghund)

Swizzlestick
I'm just going to say Whippet. :D Everything I want in a dog is what they've got. Everything that I don't want in a dog, they don't have. I can't think of anything about the breed I'd change if I could.
aussielover
1. fun loving 2. active 3. easy care coat 4. high level of trainability 5. intelligent I actually think many breeds fit this criteria. My picks would be from the gundog, guarding and herding group. My current dog fits all these criteria, she is the perfect dog to me. Having said that I think a lot of other breeds/ mixes could also make me very happy.

wuffles
ITT - people picking 5 words to describe the dog they already own Well, people are generally going to get the type of dog they like, aren't they? My points relate to one of my dogs, but my other dog definitely doesn't fit them all. I still love him but he's not my ideal dog.
Fatsofatsoman
haha - I was only joking I actually went to reply and thought "what 5 words can I use to explain Boonie" wondered if anyone actually had described a dog they didn't own. megan_
* owner focused, but able to keep themselves entertained while I'm at work, too tired etc * confident * intelligent - a problem solver * good with people and dogs, very slow to fight back, will do everything to avoid this. * high drive, with an off switch Fergus has most of these, except #2. He isn't a fearful dog but he isn't the most confident dog out there either. If he had this he would be my ideal dog. That said, he is my heart dog no matter what. Lucy has almost none of these (well, maybe the first one if I have food), but I love her anyway!
wuffles
I find it interesting lots of people are using the same descriptions but for completely different breeds :D
pie
Confident Biddable Affectionate (within family at least) Agile/athletic/resilient (Can run a lot, handle hot weather, up for anything) Wash & Wear / minimal grooming Hmmm my two dogs have some of those but not all five unfortunately
Red Fox
I can't put mine into 5 words, but the most important thing for me is balance - both mental and physical. Confident, biddable and stable are qualities that appeal too. A lot of people seem to like "high drive" dogs, but to different people that means different things. Personally, I wouldn't be happy with a dog that had a high prey drive but no real "substance" or seriousness behind it, where-as others might? Personally, I wouldn't be happy with a dog that had a high prey drive but no real "substance" or seriousness behind it, where-as others might? It depends on what you mean by seriousness. BCs and Kelpies are often high drive but a serious BC or Kelpie is different to a serious Malinois or GSD. They do different things.
Red Fox
That's true too Kavik. I like dogs with a bit of "grunt" in them.
trinabean
This is hard because I just love dogs, and can appreciate different qualities in lots of different breeds. In fact I found it hard to narrow down my list when we were choosing a dog! 1. Confident and playful 2. Friendly to people (and importantly good with kids) 3.Medium/large size with a 'wash and wear' coat 4. Loyal 5. A warning barker but not 'yappy' as we live in suburbia Many breeds may fit this criteria. We ended up with a Boxer and he suits us well. I would get one again but I wouldn't rule out other breeds either, especially if my situation/ yard size was different.
