KatrinaM
How do you know that about ALL cross bred dogs TheCoat? Could it not be that there are good and bad breeders that breed both pure and cross bred dogs?
geo
What's new, another Bull crossbreed attack, and people wonder why this type of dog is under the spotlight? No crossbreeds are finely bred animals with years of bloodlines at hand for trait selection to produce a temperament balance to safely fit into the community, crap dogs bred by idiots unfortunately. Yet another dumb comment. If you think pure breed = safety then you're sadly mistaken!!

Dogs escaping the yard and roaming in this case isn't the default behaviour for all dogs to go on an attacking rampage, in fact it would be interseting also to here people's opinion if they think their dog would attack people randomly on the street if they escaped the yard, I know mine wouldn't

sandgrubber
This gave me goosebumps: Student alerted council to dangerous dogStudent Jess Bretherton said she took photos of the dog in her yard just an hour before the attack, and had alerted her father, who in turn called the local council. Ms Bretherton took the picture that appears in this story and says she was shocked to hear about the attack. But despite the warning the Year 11 student said no-one arrived until it was too late. Police Superintendent Graham Kent, at the scene of the attack this afternoon, said council officers had informed him that animal control officers had arrived, but could not find the dog. The teen said they had previously trapped the dog in their backyard and had council staff remove it. Police at the scene confirmed the image supplied was the same dog. "I called my dad just to say this dog is here again cos it's the second time this year that it's been here," Ms Bretherton said. This attack was preventable!!! The council has a lot to answer for with, a) not impounding the dog earlier and, b) not monitoring the dog after it's previous impoundments. That was the part I found shocking, too. Also interesting that Jess Bretherton (the student) described the dog as being normal, not aggressive. Wonder what turned it vicious. Confusion about dog breeds is widespread . .. and no surprise. More such incidents and you're likely to find other places borrowing the definitions used in Sonoma County, California (where they aren't banned, but sterilization is required and highly subsidized): "Pit Bull" means any Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, or American Staffordshire Terrier breed of dog, or any mixed breed of dog which contains, as an element of its breeding, the breed of Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pit <a name="hit8">Bull Terrier, or American Staffordshire Terrier as to be identifiable as partially of the breed of Staffordshire Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier. And the child and a woman were only saved when a passer-by bundled them into his car as the bull terrier circled the vehicle in Burnside about 11am. Paramedic Mathew Singh said a man intervened and stopped the attack. "The dog had apparently attacked the boy who suffered minor scratches to his face," Mr Singh said. "The dog then turned its attention to the man who had stopped and attacked him but he wasn't hurt." The passer-by put the woman and the baby into his car as the dog was circling and threatening to attack and drove them to a nearby medical centre. “His efforts certainly reduced the chance of further attack,” Mr Singh said. Mr Singh said a neighbour who heard the commotion and came to assist was also attacked and suffered minor injuries. The dog was later caught by Melton Council rangers and the police. A spokeswoman from the Melton Shire said that the dog had been taken to the Melton pound where it will remain in custody until investigations by the Melton Shire and Victoria police conclude. Mauled=minor scratches and "The dog then turned its attention to the man who had stopped and attacked him but he wasn't hurt." ?????????????????????????????? So 1. Very rarely would you find a beloved pet roaming, unless it played escape artist, which sometimes happens. Or 2. If it did roam, it would be trained not to maul. Some people buy these types of cross breeds cheap and train them specifically to be attack / guard dogs, and don't particularly give 2 shits about whether they're contained or not. It's not only 'pit bulls' that are dangeous, there are other dogs that can be just as dangeous due to neglect and lack of training. The news papers need to stop being gossip magazines and start printing facts.
Souff
Show us the attack stats for pure breed ANKC papered dogs supplied by registered breeders then compare that with BYB crossbreed involvement, that I think would be an interesting viewing? First, show us the reports where the dogs involved in attacks are correctly identified. Many dogs are wrongly labelled and yet these descriptions often go into official stats, wrong or not. At the end of the day it is A DOG, and the entire dog world carries the scars, often because of the incredible stupidity of owners who buy the wrong dog, breed the wrong dog and generally do the wrong thing all round. I wonder, just wonder, if the dog playfully jumped up on the toddler, as friendly dogs do, & scratched his face. The tradie ''charging to the rescue'' apparently hit the dog over the head with a bloody big wrench. That is when the shit hit the fan. Dog mauls kid, grannie & attacks rescuers has a better ''feel'' journalistically wise to it tho, sells more papers.

Bottom line is the dog has caused harm to a person ( a 12 month old! ), is obviously a habitual roamer and is owned by a moron and will pay with his life. One of the stories has the baby in a pram, makes it a bit harder for a dog to accidently scratch him.

Dogs bite for a lot of different reasons, ridding dogs of fear aggression or their pre disposition to DA, isn't as simple as you make it sound. People forget the same breeders that breed for temprement also provide loving homes, training and socialising. Unless your dog has escaped, you can only guess how it would behave without you. I'm sure the owners of this dog didn't think this would happen either.

OSoSwift
So I wonder what it was, was the child scratched possibly badly, or has the child got serioud head and neck wounds?? Not that really, at then end of the day, it matters, idiot dog owner allowing the dog to roam and now the dog will die and another nail is belted into the coffin of the dog world.
