I was given a stunning hand painted porcelain plate that I would like to be able to photograph to put on my web site and share. It is very special as the picture is of my beautiful Travis.

I have a Nikon DLSR but my photography knowledge is very very slim......someone please give me some pointers.

In haste ef, before we drop out again here, check this website tutorial thingey. http://www.tabletopstudio.com/documents/silver_photography.htm

and although it is about silver, same issues involved to consider, reflections and glare spots etc. The little tents work well and are dirt cheap to buy, if you hunt on ebay. Ours came from Hong Kong only took a few days. You can mess about with cheap lights til you find a way that works for you - I did some stuff using the workshop lights from Bunnings but put daylight globes in them, did the job. Otherwise just try for soft light, don't use flash, and use a tripod rather than hand-hold as you might need longer shutter speed with softer light.
