KumaAkita
Kuma had a few skin issues and a dermo vet put him on 1000mg Cephalexin twice a day, he's been on them for nearly 2 months and we're just about to finish them. Should I be adding a pro-biotic to his diet to balance out the anti-biotics? I've been adding yoghurt to his diet regularly, as well as a yakult here or there if I remember. Any other tips? Guest Ams
Yoghurt should do it. If you use Inner health plus tablets for yourself then you can give him one but otherwise I wouldn't bother. Unless the ABs have totally stripped his tummy (and you would know that by now as his poop would be awful) then his gut flora should regenerate itself. Chris the Rebel Wolf
I was advised by my vet not to bother with probiotics at the same time as antibiotics because they conflict basically - antibiotics make probiotic useless. They are more useful after an antibiotic treatment tio restore the healthy bacteria
WreckitWhippet
You can use protexin or yogurt after the AB's are done. Give it a few days and then start.
sandgrubber
Dogs are pretty good at re-installing their gut flora . . . if you give them a chance to eat kitty pooh and all the other lovely things they love to munch on. They're happy to do the santitary version as well, if you want to pay for probiotics.
KumaAkita
Thanks everyone! His course of ABs finishes in about 3 days, so might give him a few days then start adding yoghurt more regularly if he needs it. Cheers!
