A man has thrown a puppy against a power pole and beaten it to death with a hammer in western NSW, police say.

A man parked his car at Narromine and took a border collie puppy from it about 4pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

He threw the dog against a power pole and then used a hammer to attack it, finally throwing it in grassland and leaving the scene.

The dead puppy was found by police who attended the scene.

The man has been described as Caucasian, young in age, with short hair and of neat appearance.

The car he was driving has been described as a small, green/blue coloured hatchback sedan.
