Pom Not Breathing Properly, Floppy Tongue

Hello everyone,

I have a four year old pomeranian named Vegas who is going through some troubles and I'd like some suggestions on what to do??

Last week my pom has started snoring, which at first was funny but now not so much when I realized during he day he is also what sounds like having trouble breathing while he is awAke. It sounds like it's so uncomfortable for him and so very loud! Also he has a tongue that is now just sticking out when he has his mouth closed his tongue hangs right out??

To be honest my first impression was that he has had a stroke or seizure. He has never done this before, so I took him to the vet where they did blood tests, searched for ticks, X-rays, and put him to sleep and but a camera in His throat to see what was wrong. everything came back normal and fit as a fiddle, he's getting enough oxygen, no collapsed trachiea, no elongated soft pallette, no ticks - basically all he had was an irritated throat slightly. So we Are 5 days in antibiotics and still no change...

His temperament has changed he can't fetch the ball because it makes it VERY hard for him to breathe. Doesn't really want to play at all. Food and water no problem he kills for those!!! But just generally not himself and a little sad all the time!!

The only thing I can think of is that directly before this happened I gave him a dehydrated bone to chew on which he's never had this one before but with all the results the way they are I don't know what I should do!!! I want to know what has happened to my dog but he vets are as baffled as me--- any ideas/suggestions?

Hi..I would suggest a second opinion ..and very soon. Some other vet may have a different idea, or be more experienced...

if the dog's tongue has only started hanging out in the past 24 hours .. he needs to see a vet NOW ..an emergency one if that is all that's open ..in case more happens suddenly and he becomes more paralysed.

best of luck with it - it sounds a real worry :9

The first thing i thought was collapsed trachea, but if they've ruled that out i'd most definitely be getting a second opinion, he's obviously not fit as a fiddle. have they ruled out all respiratory problems, neurological problems? act now, get another opinion, the poor darlin, thinking good thoughts for your little pom :crossfingers: :crossfingers: :crossfingers: :crossfingers:

Definitely a second opinion as soon as possible - despite what you have been told by the vet you can see there is something very wrong - hopefully there is a vet open on weekends or at least one on call close to you. Goodluck with your little guy.

Thanks everyone, I hope so too. I just discovered today that in order for the council to read our water meter they must be jumping the fence ( as it's locked) it's only been read recently because we just got the bill. wondering if that has coincided with all of his problems. If it turns out it has i wouldn't want to be the person on the other end of that phone call. :(

You are supposed to provide access for meter readers

Yes your to provide access. Usually with dogs if there is one they tell you when they are coming so you can make arrangements if they won't/can't access your yard. That is what I was wanting not some random person jumping my 5ft high fence to get in which is there to protect my dog. :(

If they xray-d his head (and he had any trauma) they would have picked up any fracture in his mandible, do you know if they xray-d his whole body?

Donatella, I am not sure exactly what it was but the xray I saw was of his throat area and a bit of his chest, nothing of his head. I will admit it's all very coincidental im just grasping at straws and trying to put something together. Realistically I may never know. Going back to the vets to see what the nxt move is I.e specialist and seeking 2nd opinion. A big thank you to everyone for your well wishes its very much appreciated! :)

I agree a second opinion is needed.

Re the meter reading. We had an incident a while ago where a meter reader was negligent when entering our yard while two of my dogs were out with me in the yard. Long story short he was a nasty peice of work and threatened to hurt my dogs. I put in a formal complaint and the electricity company manager came here for a meeting with us (the dogs all lying around us snoozing :) We had never had a problem in 9 years of meter reading prior to this new guy. Our regular meter reader loved all of our dogs and we always had a chat.

While they were unable to tell us what action was going to be taken, due to privacy laws, disiplinary action followed as this was not the first complaint made against him which was similar.

We self read our meter now despite the fact my dogs are all inside if I am not home. I hate to think what may have happened if I was not home and the dogs were out.

Good luck with your little dog, I hope everything works out well.

Are you sure they didn't just estimate? They have done that with mine because my fences are all padlocked/deadlocked when I'm not at home.

@Nic B - im so sorry that sounds like such a horrible experience to have to go through, i hope your little ones have recovered nicely.

And for everyone who has asked - he has seemed to have brightened up a bit, hes back to trying to play with his ball which is nice to see. Have been back to the vets a couple of times. They are talking to a specialist today for me to see what the specialist thinks should be done. All of his vitals are good everything is functioning normally and hes still getting enough oxygen at 98%. My issue is we dont know what the problem is and i want to find out. His symptoms and what they have checked havent put him in one box to diagnose so to speak. It could be a range of things which is why we are looking at specialists. I will need to contact my insurer to see if that is covered by them as the costs they have told me depending on what they want to do can be up to $4000.00 (for MRI) but CT scan is cheaper than that.

So will just wait and see.

The neighbours have been complaining and unfortunatley the council was parked out the front i guess monitoring what is going on. Since this has happened the last week or two his separation anxiety is out of control and his barking has been ridiculous. the neighbour next door has been really helpful and keeping me in the loop about how he is when im at work. and he has been keeping him busy during the day talking to him and giving him treats just to perk him up a bit.

So now im on the hunt for a behavioural therapist so help him with his new 'issues'.

Many thanks to everyone for your concern... just is a process of elimination at the moment.
