A police search team has rescued a dog which spent the night trapped in a mine shaft near Beaconsfield in northern Tasmania.

Paul Clements and his dog Bridie were hunting wallaby near Flowery Gully last night when the one-year-old fox terrier disappeared.

Mr Clements could not find it and started searching again this morning.

He eventually found the dog down a seven-metre deep abandoned mine shaft.

He lowered food and water and called police and the SES.

A five-man team spent the morning working to free the dog which was hauled to the surface just before midday.
