Well i have 6 day old pups (1st litter) up until yesterday mum very good, attentive with cleaning and feeding etc but in the last 12 hours has really lost interest

She allows them to feed but has not been cleaning the pups so i have not noticed any poo's, i have done the gentle stimulation and they are all urintaing but no poo's....

I was wondering is this normal? i.e should they poo frequently? or is 12 hours or more fine?

i guess with mum being so good until yesterday i havent noticed the pups doing a poo in the last few feeds...

i havent noticed any poo on the bedding either but it is purple....

my girl also wants to be out of the box now too *sigh*....leading up until 12 hours ago she wouldnt get out..

Can't help with number of poos, but would advise a vet check TODAY for mum and pups. She may have something wrong ..and pass it on to the pups .

With the bitch wanting out of the box - could she be too hot?

Bitches don't need any extra warmth... only puppies when they are not with their mum ...

Hope all goes well at the vets

Are you sure mum is not just doing a sterling job of cleaning up the poos?

My bitch kept everything spick and span and I think it was her favourite part of being a mum! YUK.

Also now that she is probably feeling a bit better and less muscle fatigued she does need to get up and wonder about more. So long as she comes back to feed and you don't let the puppies get cold it shouldn't be a problem.

Yes she is being maticulous with cleaning!!! thats why im unsure how often do they poop lol and I panic a little overnight when she seemed to loose interest for about 12 hours (if it was like 2 hours i definately wouldnt be posting this on here)

i rang the after hours vet and they said not to panic unless she wasnt even wanting to feed them or they appeared sick (puppies are doing great) checked mums temp - normal and she is taking in food and water. and she never not allowed them to feed.

She did have a shot of Ab's day of whelp as she had alot retained, so that is at the back of my mind regarding infection but her discharge is getting less and better and again ive been talking to my vet regulary and he has reassured me that what she still has is normal.

she seems fine this morning and back to cleaning them normally thankgod. she cleans the flooring in the whelping box too so again hard to see any mess plus its a purple green backed vet bed so even more difficult..

in the whelping box i have 2 hot water bottles in each corner, i find the pups are either not near them or they are laying next to them, or close to mum, or they all venture to beneath the crush rails the green back vet bedding is great. I did have a heat pad to use but it makes the box way to hot.

ive been making sure she goes out regularly in the day for about 20 mins at a time in our yard to get some exercise. however she is digging  her way to china when in the yard....(she is not normally a digger)...but i figure its just the hormones.

personally, I don't believe in any external heating unless it's Winter and freezing . If pups are cool, then they gravitate towards the heat source ..their Mum ..and that is a very good thing! :)

She sounds fine , on reading these further details :) Relax and enjoy :)

The weather we've had up here lately I don't think any heating is needed at all!

I have a litter of 3 week olds, they have had no heating since day one and from the third or fourth day mum spent most of her time lying outside the box on the cooler floor. She has a fan blowing air over the top of the box (not in to it) and a window opening on to an enclosed outdoor area open about three feet above the box all day.

My girl now gets out of the box quite a bit - pups now 2 weeks yesterday - and she sometimes goes behind the lounge and you can hear her digging at the carpet - I was told this can be a lack of calcium so if I hear her digging I give her some calcium syrup - but she was a bit of a digger on the carpet before the pups were born - she is probalby licking the behinds so well you would not see any poo - as long as the pups seem ok and are gaining weight and your vet says all is ok - today is the first time I've seen evidence of poo in my litter box before this no sign of it - she cleaned them up so well. Weigh the pups to see if they are gaining ok - if they are hungry you can usually hear them crying. Give mum plenty of calcium rich food.

thats interesting about the calcium and digging...

she is being fussy with food, but she is eating so im not worried about not getting enough calcium, she is eating her dry (rc buscuits) as well as minced frames and roo mince, cheese and yoghurt and a little goats milk. she just wont eat out of the bowl...so hand feeding her or i have to tip it on the floor!

definately weight gaining. they look like little mini wombats !

sandra777, i live near the gold coast, its not that hot (well not to me) and the room i am in is very open and cool, last night i had the doona out on me in here as i felt cold and the pups were on top of or near the hot water bottle even with mum in and out of the box.

Try gently stroking a puppy or two's anus (use a wet microfiber towel or some such). If you can't stimulate a pooh, you can be pretty sure mum is doing her job. My girls have been excellent mums and every time I've doubted them, they've proven me wrong. You gotta keep watching . . . and it's hard not to worry . . . but mother nature tends to cover this aspect of puppy raising, in my experience.
