Shiba Kai
Hi all, I have a new Shiba Inu puppy who is 8 weeks old. He has settled in very well to our home and eats and plays well. He is already toilet trained and will only go outside. During the day while we are at work, he plays in a large play-pen inside. He has a crate (door-open)in the corner, lots of chew toys filled with dry puppy food, water bowl and a tray with wee wee pads up the other end. So my concern is that he won't go to the toilet all day while in the play-pen (9 hrs) and just holds. He eats his food and drinks water but will hold until I let him out. Is this ok? Will he have bladder problems? Will encouraging him to use the wee wee pads in his play-pen counteract his toilet training? (I have tried and he just won't go inside, ever) I heard that 8 weeks pups can only hold for 3-4 hrs. I am very happy with his toilet training, but don't want him to have bladder problems/infections from holding!
Dame Aussie
That is a long time, he may consider the play pen his "area" where he eats, sleeps etc and not want to go to the toilet there. Can he be put in a bigger room maybe so he feels he has more distance between his business and his play/sleep area? Or is there an option for him to have access to the yard? Shiba Kai
We rent so we can't put in a doggie door to the back-yard. I was initially thinking he thinks it is his special area, however he has been in the kitchen for 1 day and didn't seem to like it and again he held on all day! Rysup
While its a long time, I think I'd be doing a happy dance if my puppy didnt pee inside! Can someone come home at lunch time and let him out?
persephone
I would perhaps add on to his pen..and line it with either fake or real turf ...just in case so he is good in his area..but now has a new area with 'grass'. he is being such a good boy though! twodoggies2001
Not sure whether this is totally correct, but I have been told that if a dog hold pee this could lead to bladder stones. I would probably ask the question of your vet, or your pup's breeder.
tlc
Is Pup able to have a secured area outisde during the day with access to grass to do his business on? Or like Rysup said someone to come home in the middle of the day to let him out for a wee? Any piccys of said pup??
Shiba Kai
The grass idea is good. We could buy a square and put it up the other end of his play-pen. But again, he might not go as he is still "inside" the house. We can't really make it home during the day. I enquired about visits from Lonely Pets, but $23 per 1/2 hr visit is pretty expensive... I am taking him to the vet tomorrow for a general check-up and worming, so I will enquire about bladder problems/stones etc. Would hate him to get sick from trying to do the right thing. Yes I am very suprised and happy that he is toilet trained already! The breeder said he doesn't do formal toilet training with the Shiba's, as they are naturally very clean and tidy. Will post a pic soon!
Shiba Kai
The vet said that holding won't harm him and if he really wanted to go he would. Good news!

Ronda
Awww, he's just to cute! You could get a "portable" doggy door, I've seen them at shops like best friends pets, they sit in the rails of the sliding door, so you can have the play pen on the inside and he has access to the grass outside. sas
I'd extend the pen, put down arthifical turf with a tarp under it or pee pads and use the drops that can attract them to toilet in that area.

pebbles
I wouldn't worry about him, lucky you. If he's drinking enough fluids and is happy. has had a Vet check then all will be Ok.
