Stolzseinrotts
Hi , As asked, TCI - Trans Cervical Insemination for frozen semen, has anybody had this done and could you share with us the results / experiences. I am very curious to find out more and to get a better picture of this procedure here. I know this is a common way to do a frozen implant in Europe / Canada and have spoken with a few European breeders about it. I am looking for results and experiences here in Australia and or NZ. I look forward to hearing some more. Edited October 26, 2011 by Stolzseinrotts

ish
I had a TCI done with fresh semen for one of my bitches who was later in her season than expected, when we couldn't get a mating. It was done at Monash. Didn't work for us unfortunately, but I've heard of several other breeders who've had success (although also with fresh not frozen)
SwaY
I had a litter of puppies born today, mating was done via TCI at Monash with fresh semen. Shimmer has a "special needs uterus" so we are thrilled !!
SwaY
Bitch stands, bit like a stack I guess. Vet (I had Stewart do Shimmer's) he inserts a long rod (3-4mm at a guess), and you watch it all happen on the monitor as he explains what he is doing. He then inserts what looks like a thinner rod connected to a syringe with the semen in it. All up takes maybe 30min from collecting to insemination. SwaY
Oh and you get to watch the semen swim around on the big screen whilst he gets a count etc.
Shazzapug
I know a Pug breeder who used Tci on her bitch with fresh semen and got 6 puppies...that was at a Vet in Werribee.

I look forward to hearing some more. I have used TCI twice now, to the same bitch, both times with frozen semen collected from 2 different dogs over 6 years ago, with good success. Both litters produced 8 or more pups. My understanding is that it is advisable if the bitch is quite calm and does not pant a lot while the procedure takes place (this was explained to me by Steve Metcalf of applecross vet in Perth. The first litter - we did the TCI over a 2 day period as the quality of the semen was not as good as the dog that produced the second litter. With the second litter we only did the procedure once. Would thoroughly reccomend it. I was a skeptic at first as we have always done AI via surgery prior to this. Sue
espinay2
Have had it done at Monash with frozen, but with no luck that time around unfortunately . Would do it again though. If you want to see the procedure, Dr Robert Hutchison's video "Maximising Conception in the Bitch" walks you through it (along with other types of AI, semen collection and storage etc etc - a very worthwhile video to own!!) Embellish
Registered Specialist repro vet at The University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden (NSW)does it (Dr Simon Robinson), we are currently in the process of importing some semen from Germany for him to do this very procedure. Will let you all know the results when it happens.... just waiting on the semen to arrive - and of course the bitch to be ready
Sandra777
Had it done with frozen at Glenbred in NZ. Conceived one puppy (semen was high quality from a young dog). The bitch was a maiden. Later the same bitch conceived five pups to a natural mating. Proceedure was simple and considerably less traumatic on the bitch than surgical, but results???? Hmm, not really sure quite frankly. laneka
I have not heard of anyone having any luck using TCI with a Rottweiler. I think I would play it safe and have it surgically implanted. It is a lot a money and time to waste if it does not work so my way of thinking is to give it the best chance possible.
