Reservoir dogs dig under fence, kill neighbour's pet

A pet dog has been mauled to death by three other dogs that escaped from their yard in Melbourne’s north yesterday afternoon, police say.

The dead dog’s owner was also injured when he tried to drag the animals away from his pet in his backyard in McCrae Street, Reservoir.

A Victoria Police spokesman said the three dogs had dug their way under the fence that adjoins the two properties about 4pm.

The animals savagely attacked the the dog, inflicting massive injuries. The injured dog was taken to a vet but died a short time later.

‘‘The owner of the dog attempted to assist and has received minor injuries,’’ the police spokesman said.

The Victoria Police spokesman said the breed of the attacking dogs was not known, however a caller to radio 3AW’s rumour file claimed they were pitbulls.

Police said the matter was being investigated by Darebin City Council, which has been contacted for comment.

The attack comes less than a month after the end of an amnesty period for owners to register dangerous dog breeds in Victoria.

The state government introduced the amnesty after the death of four-year-old Ayen Chol, who was killed by a neighbour’s pitbull mastiff after it ran into the girl’s St Albans house in August.

Just saw this in the paper too - can't believe they're publishing unsubstatiated evidence and naming a breed.

The Age - now stooping to the level of quality journalism demonstrated by today tonight and a current affair.

Just heard an interview on the radio and the guy in charge at the council did say that the at least one of the dogs was a pit bull but the 3 had previously been registered as staffy crosses. When this new legislation came in these dogs were not registered by the owner. There must be a reason for this, don't you think? Anyway, pit bulls or not, these dogs have now proven they are in the dangerous dog category!! Again an irresponsible owner.

they had an interview with a channel 9 journo on the ABC this morning about the attack - the journo said that the dog owner had 2 staffies, one of which he came home to find 1 mauled & he thought dead, felt a pulse, rushed him to the vet but too late. The owner claimed the 3 dogs next door were either pit bull or pit bull X, he had had issues with the dogs before, and had repeatedly asked the neighbour to address the fencing on his side by putting a barrier next to the fence as the dogs were gnawing at the wood and trying to get through the fence. Apparently these dogs are now in custody of Darebin council, and may or may not be returned to the owner.

Poor dog and owner. Mining their own business at home and get attacked, that's not on.

From the perspective of the article, that's one of the most poorly written pieces I've come across. It strikes me as horrible callous to refer to 'The dead dog's owner' is disgusting.

That link reveals more, the owner had asked several times for the dogs to be restrained better, and had even complained to the council about them. Stupid, irresponsible owner has now cost this poor guy the life of his staffy. I have a lot of respect for what this guy is saying - he's not baming the breed, he says they can be good dogs but they need to be contained, and that he legally wants justice. Way to go Joe, while nothing can bring back your staffy, at least you can help ensure nobody else looses a pet to these dogs.

Unfortunate the jail term doesn't apply to owners of dogs who kill other dogs. Does it?

Maybe they should start adding jail terms for council members who don't adequately direct their ACO's to investigate complaints and see that problem owners and their dogs are better restrained. I sense most Rangers would do their jobs if they weren't charged with so many tasks that no one could do all of them.

Conflicting reports, said dead dog was amstaff, and the 2 other dogs were stuck in the fence.

On the 7 news update just now, it's claiming 3 pitbulls broke through the fence and killed the neighbors staffy, but showed a couple of pics of what looked very much like a young Amstafff (apparently the one that was killed).

Very confusing when the media posts this kind of stuff.

Latest story I read says that the dead dog was a Staffy and it was killed by one of the Pit Bulls from next door, while the other two tried to get through the fence.
