THE RSPCA has seized 96 cats and 28 kittens from a backyard breeder in Adelaide who it says was keeping the animals in appalling conditions. The RSPCA said the cats were suffering from a range of untreated conditions including fight wound abscesses, infectious diarrhoea, skin diseases, poor body weight and poor socialisation.

Almost half of the adult cats also tested positive to feline aids and chief inspector Simon Richards said it was highly likely the suburban Chandlers Hill breeder was selling cats already infected.

Chief Veterinarian Brad Ward said feline aids was an incurable and infectious disease that was easily spread between cats through contact with saliva and bite wounds.

"While there is no cure, cats (with the disease) can live for many years, especially if they are given prompt medical attention when necessary and with supporting care," Dr Ward said.

Our information is that she wasnt selling them very often if at all but was hoarding.

This is a major problem and they are every bit as hard to spot as any illegal puppy farmer.

Harder to spot, I'd say. Cats aren't as audible as dogs; 100+ dogs and pups all barking would attract attention eventually, wheras the cats if all kept inside might not be noticed by a casual passer by. I can't imagine the state the house would be in with that many cats, but still.

Glad these cats have now found an end to their suffering, poor things. That's no way for any animal to live. I notice there is no mention yet of any punishment for the hoarder?

It surprises me that 'poor socialization' is mentioned in this article as something the cats were suffering from. Don't think I've ever read that in a dog based news story.

just the thing (NOT), reputable breeders need at a time when our gov here is already forming its knee jerk policies. Sadly people like this make me so  for the poor animals involved, who did not have a choice and have had little or no love or interaction in their lives, just being kept in appalling conditions under misguided and damaging intentions. No pity at all for these people though

Is this the breeder who used to have Maine Coons and Ragdolls? The name sounds very familiar. :(

Chris the rebel wolf, entire cats make a HELL of a noise and they STINK too. In suburbia they would be very hard to hide, but perhaps these people lived more rurally. :(
