Qld people. It is in your best interests to go and read the draft legislation and comment. There are some fairly stringent conditions listed that will affect all breeders, not just puppy farmers.

i did a quick scan and noticed it really seemed like a guideline. The word 'should' was used a lot rather than 'must'.

I guess it at least states some guidelines so that puppy farmers can't say whoops we didn't know that wasn't ok. etc.

some of the breeding specifics were interesting. only 4 litters her bitch. What does the ANKC think is appropriate? and not breeding over the age of 6 isn't really fair on a healthy bitch.

I'd like to hear others opinions. what are the issues with this document.

greyhound breeders won't be happy about that and nor should they. I wouldn't be happy about that.

There are breeds where they do not have their first season until they are past 2 and then are not bread until a minimum of 3. For some breeds a cut off of 6 will mean 1 or 2 litters.

The condition of not weaning until 7 weeks has many scenarios where it is not realistic. The bitch has no milk, the pups wean themselves or the bitch refuses to feed them. Don't hold back from having any input. That is the reason it is there for public comment. If those in QLD think that it is ok because it says "should" rather than "must" , consider that this draft will be sent to be written for legislation. It is a mere stroke of whiteout to replace one word with the other and the whole meaning is changed.

Remember the debarking regulation in Victoria. We all read it and missed the "can't show" clause.

greyhound breeders won't be happy about that and nor should they. I wouldn't be happy about that.

Knowing the Qld trainers, they probably won't be aware of it until it's too late.

Standards

S20 Dogs must receive appropriate environmental enrichment.

S21 Dogs must have an opportunity for direct contact socialisation with other dogs or humans at least once per day.

S22 For premises required to be registered, records must be kept detailing the environmental enrichment provided.

While you're reading it remember the standards are the law and the guidelines are just that - guidelines.

Ive only looked at the standards so far and will go back to guidelines later when I have some time.

Considering what they have as standards [ laws ] and what is basically optional - Id say its the easiest one Ive seen.

Where you have a situation where its only a guideline that puppies should be 8 weeks old and should be vaccinated and vet checked before they are sold

and many of the other things I consider should be laws rather than guidelines looks to me that its a waste of energy and its difficult to see how it will stop any dogs suffering any more than they do now.

.if the aim is to bring all breeders into even the basics - I reckon they missed their chance.
