Sounds like a negative association between you and the bitch and him. I was dealing with a stud dog that had troubling doing the deed in the presence of the owner. angelsun Posted October 23, 2011 Share Posted October 23, 2011 Smears are cheaper but sometimes not accurate. If you feel she is ready, simply collect from him and do an AI. It's not difficult (or find a vet that can, or another breeder) I've never used a vet for fresh collect AI as many of them are quite useless with collections. magicmine Posted October 25, 2011 Author Share Posted October 25, 2011 I took an experienced girl to a boy I have with a couple on breeders terms - his first try - I know she was 100% ready - but after 4 hours at the people's place and a lot of humping and getting no where we took the two a day later to have an assisted mating at Furkids in Brisbane - my jaw hit the ground as they had the two dogs tied in seconds - the result was 5 beautiful pups. The two ladies who did the assisted matings are wonderful and I will use them again - they told us they have saved marriages - takes all the stress out of it - they can also do a progesterone test and their prices are very good. Meanwhile you are giving your dog mixed messages & confusing him generally. His whole instinct, which is very strong with in season bitches, is telling him to mate. One time you are telling him he is not allowed to & then other times you are telling him he can. That is fine for making him wait for his dinner or a treat & making him realise that you are top of the pack but for stud use he needs to feel he is top dog or the bitch may dominate him. Its your dog & your choice how you train him but I can't see the logic in what you do with him. Neither does the bitch. They are in crates side by side but they dont care. But hey all dogs are different and when he has a bitch come well thats a different story. We have got 4 matings from day 14 to day 16 . she flagged the babies who are 6 & 9 months so thought well we had to help and she still never went near him or flagged him at all just the babies. I seem to remember some nice doco on cheetahs that showed zero conception when the girls and boys were housed/run together, and a conclusion that cheetahs could be bred in captivity when they separated the boys from the girls and only introduced the boys when the girls were in season. LizT Posted October 29, 2011 Share Posted October 29, 2011 Many years ago I had two entire bitches and one entire dog. When the dog tried mounting the bitch she'd always throw him off and hump him. We never had puppies, which in hindsight is probably a good thing but in those days there was always people in the neighbourhood who would give them a good home. That's how people got crossbred dogs in those days. Nowadays knowing so much more than I did back then, many breeders have told me that some males can need some training and assistance to learn to be good stud dogs.
