kja
Been out twice for a little late afternoon whale watching since I've been back from holidays. Pathetically, that is twice more than I got last season so I guess I should count myself lucky! Both trips had great whales - lots of them around, babies and yearlings breaching & playing, escorts getting noisy and nosy and mamas relaxing and teaching bubs how to be big whales. I do so love it here Just a couple... Mom's fin up in the air and baby's tail waving away Up and over Here's hoping I can get out at least a few more times in the upcoming weeks! Kirislin
wow, it must be an amazing experience, I've never seen them. Can you hear that noise they make above the water, or do you have to be underwater, and can you smell them too?
Frodo's mum
WOW great photo's ...how lucky are you I would love to experiance something like that
kja
Thanks, Guys It's always fun out with the whales. Kirislin: yes, you can hear them blow, slap the water and crash back into the sea when they breach. Hearing them breathe is the coolest, I reckon. I can even hear it during our walks on the beach sometimes. They aren't singing at this time of their migration so you can't hear that. Whale snot smells :D

:ange:
so great KJA... I rooly miss that WA ocean! The only place I have ever heard whales sing (underwater) was in Hawaii..
Kirislin
Hearing them breathe must be cool, I can imagine sitting out on a porch on a Summers evening listening to the whales, how good must that be. When they do sing can you hear it above the water or do you have to be underneath?
:ange:
I know you're probably asking KJA, Kirislin but I know people have heard them singing when they are standing on a beach, when the night is still and it's very quiet. When we heard them in Hawaii, we just dove down about a meter and could hear them..
kja
Walking the dogs yesterday and came across these two turtles attempting to make baby turtles. They were super mellow and totally ignored us. He'd been on her for a while as he was totally dry. After a bit he tried to scoot off her and it made the biggest squeaking noise as his dry belly rubbed over her dry shell - it was too funny to watch. And it got even funnier when he tried to swim off, got confused and headed the wrong way and finally just stopped to look around. Dumb dumb dumb...but so cute! iPhone Edited October 20, 2011 by kja
Ripley
Gorgeous pics! I'm envious of the breach shots. I went out whalewatching just past Sydney Heads a couple of weeks ago. The whales decided to approach the boat, I still had my 300mm lens attached and was wishing I'd packed the wide angle (I didn't). I will put up pics in another thread, don't want to hijack your's. kja
Yup, Crazy got it - it's some sort of huge nudibranch (probably some sort of Dendrodorididae). Absolutely stunning! I've only ever seen one of these before.
