If A Dog Eats/licks A Lizard Can They Get Salmonella Poisoning

Just wondering if anybody has any information as about 5 days ago our rotty x started to vomit, appear generally unwell and lethargic. She has had pancreatitis in the past but this was slightly different. She was eating lots of grass and bringing it all back up but no diarrhoea, couple of black stools with ++grass!. Treated as per past success, small amounts of liquid, rest, gradual increase in broth/rice etc and she started to spark up yesterday and now appears fine. Obviously, we are taking it slow exercise wise and watching food etc but wondered if she had "done" something to a lizard or skink. Have searched and found that lizards have salmonella on their skin and humans can get poisoned if they don't wash their hands etc. But not much information regarding symptoms especially in dogs apart from to the Vet if really serious!!

AS there is no mention in your post of a vet visit .. it is hard for us to say what could have been the problem. Our dogs kill/eat lizards, and have never been sick..I handle them..and have kept them as pets for years and I'm sure often i don't bother washing straight away- I've not suffered either...*touch wood*

the black stool concerns me ..as that could have been blood.

No ideas from me - except I would have thought diarrhoea would be present in cases of salmonella poisoning...

Hope your girl stays well.

Thanks Persephone, Me Too!! Stools now appear more natural in colour and she's SUPER Dog now!! A complete change from 2 days ago.

Unless a dog is unwell in other ways they're unlikely to catch salmonella. I don't think pancreatitis would qualify as unwell unless she actually had it at the time or it was chronic. I have had a dog with salmonella, she also had hookworm and was near death from the combination - lots of smelly runny poo even though she ate virtually nothing and dramatic weight loss (linked to the hookworms too no doubt). The symptoms don't really match for me.
