Katdogs Posted October 10, 2011 Share Posted October 10, 2011 (edited) My vet has recommended Dr Tony Black have a look at x-rays and Stevie's lump, but he's going on extended leave. Any suggestions for an alternative? I'll ask my vet as well of course, but she's off today and we'd like to have an appointment with someone as soon as possible. Lump was diagnosed as most likely OCD just over 12 months ago, but in the last couple of months the soft tissue swelling has grown and now it's about 4cm diameter, 1cm protruding from hock. The most strange thing is Stevie is showing no pain or limp, in fact she's more active than ever, she loves this time of year. She's six, a Lab x GR, only about 1kg overweight. My vet has discussed with all her colleagues and they can't decide definitely what to do, even whether the best course is core biopsy of the soft tissue or take a bone sample. A needle biopsy of the soft tissue was inconclusive. I was veyr happy with the level of care my dog received here a few weeks ago when she nearly died. Professor Ken Johnson at USYD. I believe he is an orthopedic specialist and he has helped a friend of mine reach the right diagnosis and treatment for her dog with HD and partial cruciate rupture. ETA: He fixed Diesel's broken leg (spiral fracture - needed external fixatur), kept me well informed, and also helped when Zoe was attacked by another dog (and I was a bit frantic ). I've seen some of his work in a dog that spiral fractured his femur into 5 pieces - the bone had literally exploded, and the xrays were as scary as all get out - the dog didn't even have a limp in older age... However, SASH is closer to you, and the other specialist there is getting a great rap from fellow DOLers... may be the first option to look at methinks... T. Rappie Posted October 11, 2011 Share Posted October 11, 2011 There are other specialist surgeons at SASH - Andrew Marchevsky, Stephen Fearnside and Martin Havlicek. Also depending on location, there are other specialist centres as well like North Shore Veterinary Specialist Centre, Animal Referral Hospital and the Uni. Thumbs up for David Lidbetter too. I refer most of my orthopaedic cases to David Lidbetter. This is partly due to location, partly because he's an excellent surgeon who does loads of orthopaedic work. My vet was keen on Tony Black because he taught her (and of course many others, including David Ledbetter). I think Ledbetter put my sister's Iggy back together after a dreadful accident. I think what we're looking for is not so much the surgical skills to start with, but also the diagnostic skills as the x-rays and aspiration are so inconclusive. We have an appointment with Stephen Fearnside for next Wednesday, as my vet has referred to him many times in the past if Dr Black was unavailable.
