Tay.
I'm really no help. Both my dogs are outside free to roam the backyard while we're out. Simply because there is no reason for them not to be.
BC Crazy
I am just not a big fan of leaving furry kids inside during the day. Much healthier for them outside in the fresh air, weather permitting of course. But that is just me. Ditto dandybrush, Stella is our Miss Distructo. Whatever she can get her little teeth into. She is also very reactive to everything, birds & lawnmowers are the fav's ATM. Barks her pretty little head off or should I say used to. The thing with her is she would be barking & I would go out to her & she would stop, go back inside for a second, barking again. So that is where the collar worked for us as it was a spontaneous correction. We have Colourbond fences so our kids can't see our neighbours, you might have to put some sort of barrier up, tarp so they can't see. I have our side gate locked at all times too just in case anyone gets any ideas about letting them out. Our neighbours aren't dog lovers. Good luck. :D Edited October 12, 2011 by BC Crazy

spyke88
try doing your routine as if you are going out, get in the car and drive it down the road and walk back up and listen. then you can hear exactly what is going on? it'll also help to hear if the spray collar is working when you get it? wuffles
Set up a webcam to see what is actually happening. This helped us when our neighbours told us about our dogs barking.
Ons
Dandybrush can you build a pen and leave them in that for the day? My coolies adapt well to a pen when we go stay at my friend's place. They know the routine well and go straight in the mornings without a complaint. Run around the place in the morning, into the pen for the day, let out in the afternoon for the night. It may well stop your dogs reacting to the dog next door and reduce the barking. When mine are at home Latte reacts to everything and has this high pitched yip yap bark. At the moment I've had to take her to my friend's who is her breeder, but they are beginning to build behind me, and she will bark and bark and bark and I worry for her safety too But at my friends she hardly barks at all in the pen
BC Crazy
Totally understand where your stress level would be ATM as mine were right over the edge when Stella was at her worst. Actually think I was making her worse cause I was sooo upset about it. I just tried to be calm (very hard I know) I am fortunate to be a stay at home mum LOL so I got a handle on this barking thing pretty quickly. When Raz starts to bark it would be winding up Willow thats why she is whining in her crate. Dam teenagers Sonny taught Stella to chase the birds but he has never been a barker. Peter Perfect. As soon as he gets excited though Stella is like "unreal whats going down, lets party" !! Bark, Bark. There has been huge improvement & I am hoping she is going to grow out of this annoying habit. Do you think someone will throw something in your yard That is very scary. I know your 2 get heaps of exercise/interaction with you so this behaviour isn't caused from being bored I wouldn't think. Willow is very smart dandybrush, while mums away :p Edited October 12, 2011 by BC Crazy
dandybrush
spyke, i could do that, but someone has to be doing something outside my house maybe i should hide and get my neighbour to wander out then when they carry on appear and rouse on her/them, maybe she will start to think i could pop up anytime to go mad at her... wuffles i'll talk to OH about the webcam idea... ons if the citronella collar doesnt work then i will talk to OH about buying one of those dog penns or even making the garage into a pen for them for when we are out OH did say if the collar doesnt work i'll have to crate willow until we can afford a colourbond fence on the front, and i will cover all the side fences with weed matting i taught raz to bark on command which then taught him to be quiet...i cant get willow to bark at me
Saffioraire
Have you tried other stimulation style experiments like getting a whole lot of kibble, or tastier alternatives like dried liver broken into small pieces, and throwing handfuls around the yard. So then their day is filled with trying to find the little bits of food? There are other party tricks too, a coke bottle with holes filled with kibble works a treat for mine (until she destroys it!) In conjunction with a bit of bamboo fencing might take the excitement/ frustration away to prevent barking. I must admit though that our young kelpie was a horror, he would bark all day at the horses next door (of course they decided to build their stallion paddock along the fence line where our dog run is (they had 80 acres to choose from!) so that didn't help! ) but the citronella collar worked a treat and he barely barks at all now. Unless it is play of course.

dandybrush
thanx saf well my citronella collar has arrived, and trust me i will be putting heaps of kibble out for the doggies to look for among other things, so hopefully we can change her behaviour as well as deter the barking with the collar
OSoSwift
HOpe it all works out for you. I don't have close neighbours and quiet dogs so not much help I guess, but have you considered the very thick shadecloth as a visual barrier??? Easy to attach with cable ties and allows some breeze through. Hope the collar works quickly
Guest Panzer Attack!
Good luck with the citronella collar, we have dogs next door that nuisance bark both at my own place and the boy's (the one next door at the boy's is far scarier, has ripped a fence pailing to get to my dog, but I digress)... and Scooter has picked up on the behaviour. I'm seriously considering a spray collar... please let us know how it goes! E x
lilmisssascha83
aww I feel for you. I have been home lately and notice that the dog out the back is trying to fence fight with Sasha. The dog constantly barks. I take sasha out for a walk,run/training in the morning before work, then scatter her food, treats around the yard so she has to "find" it during the day. Once a week she gets a huge marrow bone or a pigs ear etc to keep her occupied, plus she always has her toys on a rotational basis. I am covering our fence too as it seems that this dog is starting this behaviour against sasha as she can now see her. Sasha is never the one to start it but she has joined in ( which I don't like). But she is only doing it when this dog provokes her. Sasha is outside when I'm at work as we don't have a dog door etc. The laundry is in the back and far too small for her to stay in all day but I think she's pretty content. I did ask the neighbour yesterday if she ever hears sasha barking and she said no ( but she hears a dog out the back barking) so we both know which dog that is.
