Anyone See This Letter In Today's "age"?

I'm not an expert on Amstaffs, but I know many here are and might consider writing to the Age to refute this letter:

Name just a sales pitch

NEIL McMahon's article, ''The war on terrier'' (2/10), had an omission: it did not explain what a so-called ''American Staffordshire terrier'' is. This is a different creature from the intelligent and family-friendly English Staffordshire bull terrier. Dr Hugh Wirth will tell you that ''American Staffie'' is a sales-pitch misnomer for a pit bull terrier.

The link you gave mis-directed me as well. Are you able to find that link again, Poodlemum?

And you're wrong - there are hundreds of people concerned about the possible mis-identification. You'll find many of them elsewhere, busy working against the current Victorian Laws. So, if you are able to help by correcting the link, this will be of assistance and I'll ensure that the news reaches the right hands.

Thanks in advance, PM.

Ugh! I wish everyone in this discussion could live in a place where there are more pit bulls than Staffies. Yes, there are monster pit bulls, bred and managed to be monsters. There are pit bull X's, bred to be bigger and fiercer than the monster pit bulls. The idiots who make them that way deserve some sort of extreme management . . . desexing would be a punishment to fit the crime. But the average pit bull is a wag monster much like the average Staffie. Yah, it's not uncommon for either breed to be a bit DA, usually cause they haven't been socialised from an early age.

I sympathise with staffy owners. I wouldn't want that sort of hate and fear spilling over onto my dog, either. But it's a mistake to give in to the notion that the fear and hate is justified.

I also think the editorial misreads the AVA. The AVA says the legislation IS NOT A SOLUTION FULL STOP. . . and does not concede that it is even a temporary solution.

Thanks for the correct link, Felix. I think what everyone needs to focus on is to focus OFF the "breed" stigma and hysteria. Our whole point is that we simply have (and have had) the wrong legislation. Going by the look of a dog is not the way. Follow the info on active steps being taken in an attempt to have the Government see, hear and understand us.
