JulesP
Amber went off her food at the beginning of the week. Then on Wednesday she had a Hepatic Encephalopathy attack, the worst she has had yet. She was walking very strangely and had bad muscle tremors. Since then she has been quite dodgy. She isn't super steady on her feet and looks a bit drunk. She is eating again though. She still runs off with Poppy if Poppy goes to investigate something and apart from being very sooky doesn't seem distressed. It isn't fun to watch though. She has been on antibiotics for a couple of days but no massive improvement yet. The vet assured me that she isn't in pain. This really sucks. oakway
Is the vet treating the liver? or just giving antibiotics. Hope she improves soon. Not nice for either of you.
JulesP
Is the vet treating the liver? or just giving antibiotics. Hope she improves soon. Not nice for either of you. You can't really treat the liver as such. She is on a special diet to help the liver. Diuretics to get rid of fluid and now antibiotics. The antibiotics are to help remove the toxins that build up because her liver doesn't work. There are some herbal things I could try but I think that they would be pointless in her case. I found this video on You Tube of a pup showing HE symptoms. This is the aimless pacing side of it. Edited October 8, 2011 by JulesP

The Spotted Devil
Crap Jules The thread title made my heart sink. Good to hear she has improved - have been thinking of you both lately and hoping Amber was doing better. Maybe see you at training tomorrow x
Ptolomy
JulesP - I am sorry to hear this - you have had more than your fair share of unwell doggies this year. Having had a dog myself with liver failure, did anybody suggest you try Milk Thistle? The specialist also put us on bio-organics SAMe Forte (but this is fairly expensive - 20 tables $40). You get both over the counter at a chemist.

You get both over the counter at a chemist. The liver group suggest Milk Thistle and SAMe. The Vet specialist was a bit meh about them. Knowing what both herbs do I am not really sure there is any point giving them in Amber's case. Her liver can't rejuvenate anyway.
