kja
Don't listen to all the techno-speak - especially from salesmen. I don't understand the shorter video comment - there are very few people or times when you are going to shoot more than 29 minutes & 59 seconds (the max per CLIP) at a time. Each time you stop recording, that time resets - it's not like you can only shoot 30 minutes of video in total ;) A thirty minute clip would make people jump into oncoming traffic it would be so relentlessly boring! chicko
Lisey have a look at the new Nikon 1 camera that Nikon have just released (not in stores until the end of the month) Awesome features.. its not an SLR but WAY better then one of the smaller cameras. Might be what you are after if you dont want a big SLR?
Lisey
Hmmmm.... The pro nikon guy told me that you can only record for 5 mins per clip on the canon.... Time for more research!
jr_inoz
In regard to video - you are buying an SLR. If you want good video capability, more than 5 minutes, then you ought to buy a video camera. None of them do video brilliantly. (They do ok, but not at the quality that people expect them to). (My DSLR is too old to have video capability.) I have friend with the Nikon. I like the ease of use with the Canon. I did buy mine because I already had Canon lenses that I could swap over. If I was starting from fresh, I think I might still have bought a Canon, but I don't know for sure.
kja
He's wrong. Hopefully coz he's just clueless and not because he's a Nikon pusher. Ignore the sales people - they are going to tell you what you want to hear and what they want to sell. Edited October 8, 2011 by kja
Lisey
Yay! I did it - went with the Canon 600d and the 18-200mm lens. It's very nice - very daunting though - I have a lot to learn! I will post a couple of pics later

Kirislin
It's exciting when you finally jump in buy one isn't it. You'll start to pick it up after a while. When I first bought my 400D I was too scared to take it out of the box! so I know what you mean about daunting.
jr_inoz
woo hoo lisey. Look forward to the pictures. Hop on to the canon eos website and sign up to the my canon section. The tutorials in there are really good. They were great for me when I got my speedlite (flash). I still don't know how to use it properly, but the good basic tutorials on there were really helpful. They are industry standard now and do fantastically well. Every DOP I know owns a 5D or a 7D and loves it. They've revolutionised shooting on a budget. Here's a couple of things I've shot on it for lifestyle you - they are both nationally broadcast spots.
