I know we saw a golden retriever out side a cafe once so thought oh good they don't mind dogs so we went over y dad sat outside with kovu our gsd ( he was long haired and he came with us when we moved from England)we went in and ordered and asked if it was okayto sit outside with our dog and thy said no problem we have dog out there all the time they are not allowed inside, so we sit outside waiting for our drinks and kovu snoozed under the table when the girl brought out our drinks she looked at kovu having a snooze then quickly rushed inside and got her manager oh then came and told us to move as he did not want a dangerous dog outside his shop!!!!! So we had a bit of a yell and told him we wanted a refund which he tried to refuse but the lady with te retriever came over and joined in telling the manager that he had just lost her as a regular customer as our dog was well behaved and not being a pain the the arse like the toy poodle that was there the other day and then she walked of. He did give us a refund thank god seeing as we pointed out that we had not drunk our coffee and we had been told dogs where allowed outside. Some people just see a gsd and immediately think omg it's goig to kill me even tho that doog is having a jolly old snooze!!

ugh typical :( Thats the general reaction i have personally found from the public towards GSDs.

How long ago was this?

4 years ago now :(

I was having a think about it, I think by default I'm wary of any "bull breeds" basically because in the area of Sydney where I live I know the type of owners they attract, which ussually means the poor dogs wont have been socialised or trained properly in turn making them a possible dangerous dogs.

I'm also wary of any dog breed which is powerful enough to do damage to me. I'm a 100 kilos of pure muscle.....ok I lied about the muscle part. But really its not due to the temperment of any breed its more to do so with the lack of trust of people who won them...and it really is only a wearyness or cautiousness which I think is a responcible approach to any animal you are not familier with.

This thread makes me so sad - discovering so many people have a fear of my most favourite breed, the German Shepherd :(

I take my long-haird shepherd to work with me every day and she greets the customers by putting her front feet on the counter and receiving heaps of pats - I've never had a bad reaction from a customer yet  . Although, when I take my (military) shepherd pup for his walk I'm discovering there's not many people that want to go near him - he does have a *different* look to my female, but he's JUST a pup:-

From what I can gather from the replies so far, most people are not necessarily wary of certain breeds, but they are concerned about the consequences to themselves, their family and dogs as a result of certain behaviours displayed by dogs.

This is totally understandable and the reason why the owners of dogs that are medium to large in size need to be aware of their dogs’ behaviour at all times and the effect that inappropriate behaviour can have.

Yes, it is unfair that the owners of larger dogs need to be more vigilant and responsible when it comes to behaviour, training and socialising, but it is a condition of owning a larger dog breed and something that dog owners need to accept. Big dogs can cause more damage as a result of bad behaviour, regardless of breed.

If you own a breed that attracts undesirable owners, then responsible owners have a greater duty of care to that breed by ensuring their dogs are properly trained, socialised and constantly supervised, thus ensuring that their behaviour is beyond reproach at all times, not just when in public.

It is most definitely the deed not the breed, but that extends to the owners as much as the dogs themselves.

I would agree with this except how do you then explain people being afraid of a puppy (GSD) that's only the size of a small breed dog - that is all to do with the breed I would think

:offtopic: But I think your military shepherd pup is gorgeous! Could just be the photo but he looks like he's going to be a big guy!

GSD's are among my favourite breeds.

I'm not wary of medium/ large breeds per se, in fact as a dog owner I prefer larger breeds.

I am vigilant of off-lead dogs (regardless of breed) when walking my dog in our local on-lead walk trails. With one exception, every time my on-lead dog has been rushed by a loose dog it has been by a small 'harmless' sized dog. It's odd that the owners of these little dogs with poor recall are willing to risk their dog's safety. Luckily my dog is playful (and on-lead), but not all dogs would be.

So the breed I dislike is Small Yappy Snappers. Oh, and their irresponsible owners. ;)

while i do have a wariness of GSD's its pretty limited to unknown adult dogs. once i get to know dogs i love the personality of GSD's. i definitely would not be freaking out at one being outside a cafe! thats outrageous! it is essentially - i would be more wary of an unaccompanied or offlead GSD than i would most other breeds. but like anything - its all to do with who owns them. and unfortunately the run ins i had as a child - the dogs were owned by complete *censored*

i knew a beautiful shep in WA by the name of Zarek that went to the whiteman dog park. he was MASSIVE but after meeting him once i wasn't afraid of him at all..

for me i think it is all down to the vibe i get from the individual dog.

i do think it is very sad that because the dog is larger is generates more fear... when a jack russel i used to live with could cause more damage than most large breed dogs i have ever known!

I prefer large breeds too, & I adore GSDs & Rotties.

Whether it's a breed thing or a necessity of ownership, I'm less inclined to be worried if I see those breeds because they seem to be very obedient 9 times out of 10. I am always aware and check for that 1 out of 10 each time.

However, those of you that own GSDs & Rotties (& dobes too), must realise that to non "doggie" people they can appear terrifying just by their looks (& popular culture associations). My OH is one such person, & I could see him quivering with horror at the sight of our daughter & me cuddling an enormous sooky Rottie the other day! He thought we were mad!!

But suprise, suprise, we weren't eaten.

Maybe one day I will be able to convince him we can have one. ;)

Once he actually owns one he might just change his mind ;) lol

i have found quite a few people describe spider - my border x husky - as "scary looking" it intrigues me what people deem as "scary" lol

I don't find him scary; to me he looks very sweet. The word 'spider' makes me jump 'cause I have Arachnophobia

i had a gsd as a younger woman and he was fine with people

but he did injure a dog that got into our yard

i am always wary of any dogs that are loose...

if im walking with my dogs on lead i am always looking out for dogs that might be on their front lawn

we have a couple of labs that go psycho when we go past their house and sometimes theyre let loose in our street...dont know what theyd do to my dogs if they had an encounter though

seen too many dog attacks and it is far too distressing to dwell on
