WillowGirl Posted October 3, 2011 Share Posted October 3, 2011 Hi, I have been reading about BSL in the other threads and kept thinking I would gladly run into a Pit Bull or any mix thereof than an unnacompanied German Shepherd Dog or Siberian Husky I think I have a bit of a fear of GSD's since my cousin was bitten by a nasty one back when I was 10. It lived on a corner we had to walk past to go to school and it was out one time and bit my cousin. Have been wary of them ever since. Not that I think they are all nasty or anything. Also, saw a girl in emergency one time that had a nasty bite on her arm from her friends Sibe. Not nice. Wary of them as well, though I think they are beautiful looking animals. We also had a cranky, huge rotty live next door when I was a kid, but I am not afraid of them at all. Probably since I have met so many over my lifetime and most are real sweeties. So I was curious if anyone else has a bit of wariness regarding any particular breed (whether it be from a childhood trauma or not) or if you have been bitten by any breed, are you wary of that breed? Baileys mum Posted October 3, 2011 Share Posted October 3, 2011 (edited) I try not to judge a breed as a whole, as I believe there is good & bad temperment dogs in every breed of dog. Having said that, I've been lucky not to really have had a bad experience with a dog of any breed....but I can understand when people are wary of a particular breed, if they've had a bad experience with them. I know many of them are beautiful and friendly but when I was younger I was at a family friends' house and their GSD chased me around the backyard until I climbed the wood pile where it couldn't reach me Since then I have always been a bit wary of them. I have also heard stories from an elderly family member who owned a GSD who bit her when she was feeding him. Also a bit wary of Rotties - not sure why though ETA: having said this I do know many examples of both breeds who wouldn't hurt a fly, so I know every dog is different and you can't judge a whole breed based on one experience!! One of the attacks recently reported really stressed me out, that was a dingo that was attacked and killed. I am not so worried about myself but am very worried about the dogs. RubyStar Posted October 3, 2011 Share Posted October 3, 2011 I am just wary of any medium to large dogs that are wandering by themselves or are left in unsecured front yards with no owner in sight. After being bailed up by 2 barking/snarling unattended dogs in a front yard across the road and bitten by one of them, a dog of any description with no owner around makes my heart race and my legs turn to jelly. It's a fact that some breeds are more prone to dog aggression or high prey drive, and while not all dogs of the breed would have those characteristics, and while they could be kept under control through training and socialisation, it's still a fact that some breeds are prone to it. That's why there are dog breeds, to get certain characteristics, and if I see a dog of a breed that is prone to that, I will prefer to keep my two small dogs away from it. It's not because I hate the breed, it's just a breed characteristic that I know of, and unless I know the dog, or I know that it's trained etc, then I will be wary and careful around the dog. For instance, I'd never let my small dogs play with a pit bull, staffy, sibe or greyhound, to mention a few. And I have nothing personal against those breeds, in fact I quite like greyhounds and would consider owning one, but I am familiar with the traits that are typical for the breeds. I'm not gonna risk letting my dogs play with breeds like that just to prove a point about how "it's not the breed". I'd rather be safe and be considered prejudiced than have two dead dogs that were allowed to play with known dog aggressive breeds. spyke88 Posted October 3, 2011 Share Posted October 3, 2011 i am wary of gsd's too after a few nasty run ins as a child - that being said i used to know a gorgeous giant gsd back in perth who was amazing. and also.. im wary of jack russels lol. so it can go anyway really personal experience goes along way to being wary of a breed. im sure there is a different person wary of each breed known to man through personal experience. lol. nickyp Posted October 3, 2011 Share Posted October 3, 2011 I tend to be wary of large (but not giant) breeds, like GSDs, etc., or the really tiny dogs, like chihuahuas or poms - probably because I've had unpleasant experiences with both. I'm much more comfortable with giant dogs (every one I've ever met was a big sweety) and medium-small dogs. I think it's the lack of eye contact and the fact that body language disappears in a mass of hair. A mass of growling, bristling hair, in my limited experience and poor interactions with the breed. /edited to add the word 'interactions', because apparently my writing is also poor. Souff is wary of men with red hair, and snakes. Horrible things, both of them. Have nasty memories of both and will cross the street not to be anywhere near them. Toads also are in Souff's bad books ... there is just no need to have those ugly things so cant we just nuke them all? I spose there will always be things that I don't like and things that I do like. I don't like those cars that look like they were made in the 1940s but had a revival here a few years ago - people paid big money for them I hear, but I think they are just plain ugly. Cant nuke them too I suppose? Souff is not really wary of any dog breed. Am more wary of some of the owners really, and very wary of people who give breeds a bad name. Zug Zug Posted October 3, 2011 Share Posted October 3, 2011 I was badly attacked by a boxer in my early 20s. I was scared of all dogs for a bit, then all big dogs, then just boxers, and now I am fine with all of tge above. I didn't want to go through life with fears, so made a point of meeting and (with permission) patting nice boxers whenever the opportunity arose. Most boxers are lovely and I quite like them now. Talien Posted October 3, 2011 Share Posted October 3, 2011 I am a bit strange when it comes to being wary. I LOVE GSD's! I Love them and I want to own one oneday. But I was bitten by one. I didn't know the dog, it was on it's property and I shouldn't have patted it (I was very very young). I don't blame the dog at all, but I still have this niggly worry each time I see one, which is why I didn't choose to get one as my first dog. I don't think the relationship would go well if I was even a little bit afraid of it. That said, these days I am only wary of GSD's if they are off-leash and running towards me, and don't know them. If they are with their owner I am fine and even happy to pat them. But now I ask first! Any dog, ANY dog that has dangly pink lips scares the crap out of me... or rather, they make me very uncomfortable! I am NOT for putting entire breeds down, this is just another herald from my childhood (pitbull turned on neighbour after a bad experience in a kennel), and I remember snapping jaws and crazy eyes from this dog because the fence was low.
