Going Out After Vaccinations

I took my puppy to puppy classes before he was fully vaccinated. Most vets no longer recommend keeping a puppy isolated until it's fully vaccinated because for every 1 dog that dies because of parvo, 100 dogs will be put to sleep due to behavioural problems. So if you take the puppy out in public before the final vaccine, there is a small chance it could catch something. But if you don't socialise your puppy, you are nearly guaranteed to have socialisation issues.

Obviously be smart about it, don't take the puppy to dog parks and high risk areas, but puppy classes are fine, and you should also take the puppy out to experience as many new environments and situations as possible. Expose it to loads of people, dogs (without interacting, just as important as interacting), traffic, heavy machinery, kids yelling and screaming etc etc. Even if you have to carry the puppy, that's fine, it's still being socialised.

Wilbur had his 3rd vaccination shot two (booster) Friday's ago. Our vet said no out & about until this coming Friday (2 week wait). I got tired of carrying the lump around; like Gibbs he's way too heavy to be lugging around. Today i took him out to our main street shopping precinct so he could socialise in a higher traffic area. It was on paths so i'm figuring he'll be fine.

Suzie our vet also said to wait until 16 week vac but a lot of people dont even do a 16 week its only a booster. Plus as Mason is out and about snd coming home to Gibbs if Gibbs was going to catch something he would have by now so i may take him next sunday. If he was confident with other dogs i may wait but he isnt which is why i want him to go as soon as.

I started taking Izzy to puppy class at Northern Suburbs when she was 9 weeks old - our previous dog had suffered from fear aggression and I was very keen to socialize her early.

She is now 3 1/2 and has never had a days sickness - she also didn't have the 16 week booster vacc as our vet thought it unneccesary.

I'm sure taking Gibbs 1 day early won't be a problem

Are you in a high parvo area?

I took Mindy out about around 4-5 days after her 12 week vax (she was on the 2 vax only schedule) but we are in a very low parvo area so the risk was not great.

It is generally up to 2 weeks, depending on the individiual dog until they have full immunity.

If the puppy class is held on club grounds where only vacicnated dogs are allowed, I would think that it would be fine :)

i took my pup to the markets the beach everywhere with me before he was fully vaccinated i just held him all the time, well me my mum and my Oh so we could share the load not that we got far as we where stopped every 2 seconds... i should have set up a pat the puppy stand  i also had a picnic blanket to put him down on for a bit water and a puppy pad to pee on so he didn't have to go on the grass  so he never touched the ground and i didn't let him get sniffed by other dogs. but really the thing is your dog could just as easily get parvo from someone coming to your house to see him. but that was all in our local area so we knew is wasn't a high risk area the town near us was but we are not might be all the salt in the air ;)

M&G IMO it's always a calculated risk. At our dog club - also on a public ground, we allow puppies to start any time after their 12 week shot (or after their 10 week Nobivac) - we're on a public ground, but there's little parvo around at the moment - in fact, luckily, for most of the year down here.

Because of circumstances of timing, Rory came to Melbourne with me within a couple of days of his 12 week vacc - and so I had to take calculated chances - even in high summer. Luckily, all was well.

If there was a parvo outbreak in the area, I wouldn't be taking him - but at present, I'd take the chance - as you say - he's potentially exposed through Mason's comings and goings (and yours) anyway. I'd say go for it - but just be aware that if he became off colour, you'd want to get him to the vet asap - which you do anyway. :D

BTW, have I told you how adorable I think Gibbs looks.

OMG EVIL PC OF DOOM.

I have written this post 3 times now!

Ok. So, sorry to hijack the conversation but this is also something that I am worried about, I've been "lurking" in the thread trying to see if anyone gave a difinitive answer but I'm gessing it's sort of a case by case basis so figured I'd post to see what you all thought.

I will be picking up my puppy at about 8 weeks (I think?).

Because of how far it is to get home (3 hours) I'll be staying at my mum's house. She has two vaccinated Cocker Spaniels. Will Arty be able to go outside with them? Will he even be able to be around them?

Do you think I should call the vet at my mums (about a block away, if that) and find out if the area is dangerous for parvo or anything else?

I had a feeling it would be ok, I mean it's sort of like bringing a puppy home when you already have a dog. Arty will be spending a lot of time with magyk and Merlin over his lifetime so it can't hurt to introduce him early :) thought I'd better check regardless though!
