Marlfoxx
Hi! We are thinking of trying to show our GSD pups but have no experience in the matter. Does anyone know how we might go about finding someone that might be able to handle them for us in the ring? Cheers!
Mrs Rusty Bucket
I'd try the German Shepherd Club at West Beach. They would know someone who can help.
Guest DBT
Why not contact Dogs SA and ask for a contact re Junior handlers. These kids take it very seriously and I'm sure many would jump at the chance to handle some new dogs. You can also ask them for details about show handling/training classes that are held in & around Adelaide. http://www.dogssa.com.au/Website/index.php?id=28&level=2 Edited September 29, 2011 by DBT
Delaforce
Hi Marlfoxx, The German Shepherd Dog Club of SA conduct show training classes on Wednesday nights starting at 7:30pm for puppies onwrds and also on Sunday mornings but not this Sunday as it is a long weekend. They concentrate more on the Specialist type of training which is pulling out on the end of the lead. As for All Breeds traing there is a person who advertises in the DogSA journal. All breeds ring are smaller and more control is needed. Hope this helps you out. The new finanical year for the GSDC of SA is just about to start so why not go down and have a look and a talk and someone down there may be able to help you out, if you like it join. There is a members competition coming up soon for you to look at if yo wish. Check out the web site you'll find it if you google German Shepherd Dog Club of SA. All the times for training are on the website. Hope this helps Cheers
HugL
Have you contacted your breeder? Usually this is the first person you should speak to. I suggest you go out to a few shows first. As Delaforce says, there are two ways of handling GSD in the ring. Specialists allow them to fun out in front and pull around the ring. All breeds use a smaller ring and more control is required. I only run in all breeds and know that most people ring-side are happy to talk to you about their breed. Unless your dog is well behaved around other dogs, maybe leave it at home or in the car the first time. Also so you can concentrate on what is happening and the advice you may be getting. Not sure where you are but my GSD will be in the shows at Pt Pirie this weekend. Happy to chat if you can make it.
