I am trying to find out more information on certain breeders but each time i try to go to the Victorian Canine Association, it says the website is unavailable.

Is there a way to find out whether or not a breeder is registered with the victorian canine association?

Should I be worried if the breeder is not part of any clubs associated with their breeds or if they are not part of the VCA? Is it normal to not be?

To be a "registered breeder" you have to be a member of the VCA. Any other breeder is a "back yard breeder".

I don't know about other breeds but, with Labradors, it is recommended that you buy a puppy from a breeder who is a member of the Labrador Retriever Club of Victoria, as well as the VCA.

I think this is mainly because a breeder who is registered with the VCA is only required to DNA test for Hips and Elbows...while a breeder who is registered with the Lab Club is required to DNA test for Hips, Elbows, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC).

The Lab Club also has its own Code of Ethics, which breeders must adhere to. Your own Breed Club will have a booklet they can send to you, which contains answers to these and other questions.

Yes, you can ring the VCA and they can tell you if a breeder is registered or not.

There are some great breed clubs. However: Some breed clubs have internal politics that have driven would-be members out. Some people live so far from where the breed club meets that it's not worth their while to join. Some breed clubs don't do much. I wouldn't necessarily dismiss a breeder who doesn't belong to their state breed club.

Thanks so much, I emailed the breeder herself, and (she is such a wonderful lady), she put any worries I had to rest. She is definately not a backyard breeder and strives to better the breed :)

I can't wait to get my puppy and she's happy to have a friendship too so that if I or arty ever need anything we can go to her and seek help and advice.

I am so happy! :D
