MissMaddy
I have a singleton puppy who is now 4 weeks old. ETA- I'm obviously looking for when he's older and can go out to puppy school. I am hoping to find a decent puppy school, where the instructors have good knowledge of dog behaviour. Given he's not getting the socialisation of litter mates, I need somewhere pretty special to help me teach him these doggy manners he could miss out on. His mum is doing a brilliant job, but I'd love him to get a bit of healthy interaction with other dogs his own size/age. I live in Bendigo, but will be moving to the other side of Melbourne around when he's old enough (not sure where yet, still looking at properties, but likely Gembrook or Seville areas), so am willing to travel for the right place. MissMaddy
I have mum, and he's still in with her (and she'll play with him and discipline him), but as he's a singleton, no litter mates unfortunately. This is the main reason I would like someone who knows what they're talking about with dog behaviour and body language, as it needs to be a positive and educational experience for him. Actually, it would be great to find people with balanced, not over the top dogs for him to interact and play with as well. I'd like to try and make up for what he's missing not having litter mates as much as possible. If only I knew someone with a litter similar age that he could go and visit to learn some doggy things from..... ETA- I have had somewhere in Ferntree Gulley recommended by my bitche's breeder, as well as one down in Geelong. I'm happy to drive if I need to, but the closer the better obviously. murve
my OH is brilliant with reading dog behavour & language & emphazise positive praise/ education, if he can tap into a Whippet brain & train me to CCD Title, he would be able to help to you, this Whiipet is already for to take on CD Title, & he is loving it. thanks to my OH our yougest pups are just 12months Papillons, one of them is scared of Shepherds, that is from a bad scare he got, when he was 5 months old, we have been slowly working on it, our prob was finding someone with a shepherd who would work with us we now have him going up close :D to say hello I know where you are coming from in ref to single pup in litter, our bitch came from that situation, she only had adluts to play with she was 4 months when she came home to us. With that, bang staight into puppy school for her, now just on 3 yrs on she is good.
MissMaddy
Ok, thanks murve, will organise to meet up with you when he's a bit closer to the right age (and me to moving and knowing where I'll live). Do you guys run Westernport club? Or elsewhere? He's probably already bigger than your adult paps! I also have a male GSD, who is a very balanced, calm dog that I'd be happy to use to work with fearful dogs. He'll be great with the pup too, but I think he might let him get away with a little too much.
murve
That's ok happy to help yes your boy would be a little bigger than our paps but I dont care, in our household we a Rottie, Cavi x Chi, JRT, Whippet & 3 Paps yes its a managary of breeds, couple of these were rescue jobs with major probs, now they all live in harmony & have for a number of years I am on the committee of Westernport dog club, the clubrooms is at Kcc Park grounds Our Whippet is used regually for new older dogs at club, that have not been socialized properly, then the others latter, at club & elsewhere to many at once can be very daunting for a very young dog before puppy school, Janine runs puppy classes at our club & she is very big on inter-acting the pups during class as well as teaching commands, giving the handlers homework to do, I think it would be great to work with your Shepherd boy & our pap pup :D
JulesP
In this case I would suggest one of the private trainers. Fairly sure Cosmolo and Erny run puppy classes. Linda Vaughan might be worth calling too http://www.abfabdogs.com/
MissMaddy
In this case I would suggest one of the private trainers. Fairly sure Cosmolo and Erny run puppy classes. Linda Vaughan might be worth calling too http://www.abfabdogs.com/ One of the private trainers was sort of what I was thinking of, but didn't know which of them ran/run puppy classes. I wasn't aware Erny was running puppy classes (although has been a looonnngg time since I spoke to her as I've lived up here for nearly 2 years). Don't know why I didn't think of Cosmolo.... Problem with Westernport I realised Murve, is that I often go the the shepherd club at the same time/day, and think 2 in one day would just be too close together for his little baby brain. I'm hoping to take him to both. I think I'll visit a few recommended ones, and see which one I'm happiest with.
