Red Fox
I currently use Interceptor once every six weeks for my Ridgeback, however am thinking of changing to ProHeart tablets (monthly) and only treat for intestinal worms if/as needed. Just a few questions for those that use it; Can you crumble it up like Interceptor or does the dog have to take it as a chew or tablet? Are the active ingredients similar? Is it safe to give it at 6 weekly intervals? (ie recommended monthly, but okay to give up to 45 days). What's the safety margain compared to Interceptor? Any known side effects? Recommendations for a suitable intestinal wormer to use in conjunction with the above. Thank you.
megan_
I've read in a few places that ProHeart isn't considered effective anymore? I think it was on DOL!
Austerra
Just curious, why are you giving Interceptor only every six weeks when the dosage is monthly? Surely the effectiveness would be decreased by lowering the dosage Edited September 19, 2011 by Austerra
Red Fox
Just curious, why are you giving Interceptor only every six weeks when the dosage is monthly? Surely the effectiveness would be decreased by lowering the dosage Less chemicals, less often. It's safe and effective to give at 6 weekly intervals (up to 45 days between dosage) if you're consistant with it.
Rebanne
I give valuheart every 6 weeks and have done so for the last 2 or 3 years, I break it up and put it in a bit of mince or tinned cat food.

Chris the Rebel Wolf
Proheart is a tablet form and should be given monthly. It uses moxidectin which is a related chemical to the mibemycin that Interceptor uses. Like with most of that family of drugs it was a wide safety margin although there are breeds (Such as Rough Collies) who are known to have sensitivity issues. I would strongly advise you not to treat for intestonials 'if/as needed' - some intestional worms can be quite dangerous even in small doses. Did you know hookworm larvae for example can actually burrow through the skin to invest dogs and other species (humans included?) It is important to remember, wormers do not PREVENT dogs from picking worms up, they kill any they have picked up, which is personally why I approval of a monthly dose like Interceptor. From the personal point of view I would far recommend Interceptor over Proheart because Novatris have so much research in and backing of their product, Proheart is more a 'no name' brand.
