german_shep_fan
Go viral. Scream it from the bloody rooftops. Before it's all too late. Maybe even as far as dol goes post it into the general discussion forums ect so everyone here can see it and start spreading the word? Contact the GSD club in Vic and all the other breed clubs who are on their list? Even the national councils of these breeds ect, ppl need to know, we need to make sure they know we are not going down without a fight!
Zug Zug
Yep I agree. There has always been a toughie breed. When I was a kid it was GSDs. Then dobermanns and Rottweilers. Then bull terriers and staffies. Now pit bulls. There will always be people who want their dogs to be tough, and who have no clue how to raise them. I wish I knew more about dog attacks. Have they really increased in frequency and severity? Or do we just talk about them more these days?
Pretty Miss Emma
I live in Glenroy, thankfully the nicer side, but I used to live close to where this latest attack happened. This suburb is particularly bad for dogs off leash and wandering. I usually average at least one stray a year I drop into the local vet for scanning. About half are chipped. Even around the block where I live I am so sick of charging dogs. Some are not fully contained and will come right out of the yard after us. I have reported quite a few to the council, in particular one little pom who is always wandering over the road, that I have seen nearly get skittled twice. He is a nasty little bugger I'm wondering if you live near me (also Glenroy)!!! When I walk my dog I feel like I'm constantly battling wandering dogs. There is a maltese x of sorts that rushes and bites my dog (well, it used to with my old dog I try to avoid that area now as the young one would not deal with it as politely!). At the moment every morning I'm seeing a guy walk his black lab of leash around the streets, my dog sees this and instantly starts to show her signs of anxiety as this lab (while it is under some sort of control) is quite obviously off lead and she feels uncertain about what might happen next. Then there are the 2 jack russell x's that run up and down the road barking at us if we walk past (btw they are not behind a fence they are running on the footpath and road), and will follow us for a good 50m or so. I live across the road from an off leash park and I'm more than willing to take a wide-berth around dogs that are in the park to keep my dog calm. But I expect that when I'm walking her in the streets I should be able to do so without having to be constantly keeeping an eye out for poorly socialised dogs that are not supervised or owners that apparently don't think the basic laws apply to them. It just makes me cross when some of us are trying to be good role models and responsible owners yet these people do the wrong thing and all dogs end up being painted with the same brush. And I have to say I have found the council officers to be basically of no use whatsoever. Mind you now with all these new laws I'm sure they'll be gung-ho in this municipality (it seems the AMO's are only really interested in you if they get to harrass you around here, not so much in to the helping side of things). sandgrubber
Yooo hooo. Where's Matthew B when we need him. ;) I'm sure he'll say it was a bull breed dressed up as a Lab ;) Not funny. Breed misidentification is widespread for all breeds. Do you automatically trust the media when they say Labrador and distrust them when they say pit bull. . . . or for the matter, a Jack Russell cross. The NCRC did both 'spot the pit bull x' and a 'spot the lab x' posters. I flunked the Lab test, and I'm a Lab breeder! See http://nationalcanin...identification/ . . . the links below will download a couple posters Can you guess the mix of breeds in these dogs? Which are "pit bull" mixes? Can you guess the mix of breeds in these dogs? Which are Labrador Retriever mixes? The reporting on this story is inadequate to form an opinion. We don't know whether either, or both dogs were on leashes. We don't know what, if anything, the owners did to head off or cause the attack. We don't know whether either or both dogs were DA. Tapferhund
I would believe that We need to stop this rot now. I don't believe ANKC will help. What are we going to do. I have no idea. For the moment I am trying to find out from others who were also there if that is exactly what was said as I want to double check first before I start contacting my State and Fed members. If i find out more I will post.

I am starting to think twice about walking around our area as we have a fair few dogs wandering or on front lawns of peoples propertys..and when you walk past (need I say more  ),,,so, now with the new laws and me having Shepherds...if anything happened...my dogs , on lead, would get the blame and could be declared dangerous...so I don't think I will be walking anymore. Instead I will do what others are doing and for much of the same reasons.....drive to a park and give the dogs a run instead.

Nekhbet
These dog bites are more happening because councils are not managing their municipalities then dogs just suddenly snapping.
Tim'sMum
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8297934/melbourne-man-seriously-injured-in-dog-attack A Melbourne man has suffered serious injuries to his face and arms after a dog attacked him in the city's northern suburbs. The man, in his 50's, was walking his own dog in the suburb of Glenroy when he was attacked. He has been taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital for treatment. The breed of the dog is not yet known. When is this going to end? I saw it on a newsflash on the tele. They showed a man being taken to an ambulance. I haven't watched the video link of the story yet, just read it. And when will people learn to keep their dogs contained? they are making it look so bad for all of us who do the right thing. Not to mention all the dogs that are going to suffer because of these peoples negligence. With a 4 million human population and with a possible 1 million dog owners/dogs(?) within that...there would have to be bites happening from time to time......but now with that child being bitten and dying a few weeks ago....the media are going to JUMP on every single little thing they hear in regard to someone (or dog) being bitten. I heard something today which is frightening. The source of this information is highly regarded both in the dog world and within Govt's. The Vic Govt is planning on adding MANY other breeds to the list including GSDs Rotties, Dobes...AND they are working towards a total ban on the breeding of all dogs as well as the stopping of dog interests such as in showing dogs...for the eventual outcome of no dogs in Victoria once those who are alive now have died out. This I believe is on paper now and is being kept on the QT from everyone finding out so they can bring it into eventual fruition . I think we all need to band together...every dog owner possible....to fight this! Sorry....but I can't see that ever happening. Dog owners VOTE! Dog breeders VOTE! Any government that even attempted this would be committing political suicide. I don't know where you heard this rumour...but it's rubbish and sounds like something PETA would put out. You cannot legislate against stupidity....so there will always be people with unsocialised dogs, and any breed of unsocialised dog will bite or fight another dog. I have had my GSD attacked by a GR at a park and a BC attacked a friend's dog at a park....both breeds that are not renowned for attacking. Any breed will have a go if it hasn't been socialised....and all the fear and hysteria over dog attacks will lead to more unsocialised dogs....and exacerbate the problem. ~Anne~
I am not too sure that they would be looking at banning breeding dogs. Extending the breed bans - you bet, but banning the breeding and showing of all dogs? Not likely at all in my personal opinion. I feel that if dog owners go rushing off throwing this accusation (banning breeding and showing) in their letters and the campaign, they will come off looking like rampaging nutters. mita
Ughh! How awful! I'd hardly call it aggression though. Honestly I think dogs would eat their owners if they dies or passed out for long enough to get the dog hungry . Perhaps the dog was trying to rouse the owner??? I'd tend to agree, aussie. Maybe it was related to anxiety in the face of a comatose owner. But when so many of these 'dog incidents' are unpicked, they may not be as slaveringly savage as they appear. And I speak as one person who spoke up for the blue heeler that bit me. That was not a 'person attacking' dog.....it was a dog out for a dog fight & allowed to do so by an owner. That was a situation that was remediable by doing what responsible owners do....they socialise their dogs with other dogs and contain their dogs on their property. There's something hysterical that breaks out over dog incidents. I bet over the day & night when this latest 'media' reported incident happened, there would've been hundreds of cases of human whacking humans all over the country. To the extent that some medical treatment was necessary. I remember reading some stats that compared numbers of people turning up needing medical treatment.....from dog bites and from human aggression. One guess which number was way, way larger. mita
There was an excellent report from a Task Force set up by the American Veterinary Association. They argued for a community approach to preventing dog bites and attacks. Not for banning breeds. The report covers a lot of points that DOLers have brought up, starting from the point that the reporting of dog attacks in the media tends to whip up a frenzy that sets 'remediation' in the wrong direction. So their report starts off with having a cool-headed look at what actually happens in dog-human interactions that go wrong....& why is it so. They also argue for informed commentators to have the job of contributing to media reports, in the first instance. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:3ETXfcU1KmYJ:www.avma.org/public_health/dogbite/dogbite.pdf+Comparison+numbers+of+people+turning+up+at+hospital+for+dog It was interesting that the Australian Veterinary Association spokesperson who contributed to the Sydney Morning Herald's excellent article on dog bites, took this line. Her comments were designed to inform, & to hose down hysteria. They were supported by equally sensible comments from an academic from Monash University. LizT
Saw a follow up on the story in the News last night where they interviewed the poor fellow and he was very distressed. His little dog seemed okay, which is good. Anyway, here's the thing, they say they are looking for a white dog with brown spots on his face and a red collar. Doesn't sound like a lab to me.???? Some kind of Cross Lab perhaps.
