I read a similar article. This is what concerns me:

Any American pit bull terrier not registered by September 30 will be destroyed.

The biggest question for me is who is actually policing it? Any old joe who gets hired by council is then qualified to pick pit from non pit?

I am all for the owner being accountable for the dogs actions, but there should be more focus on pushing training, socialisation etc, rather than wiping out a breed to magically make the world a better place.

Misleading quote, they don't have the power to immediately destroy your dog without going through the proper process.

news.com.au appears to have pretty low journalistic standards. I suggest refraining from further discussion until State Agriculture Minister Peter Walsh introduces new offences to the Crimes Act in parliament. I'm tired of kicking dead horses.

If your dog kills someone, fair enough, you face criminal charges.

HOWEVER, what I am really interested in, what the rules will be for dogs on their OWN property, where they cannot be easily accessed. What if someone jumps your fence and the dog attacks?

Will they remain the same, or will they too change?

This is the point I was just about to make. I really don't think an owner should face up to 10 years in prison, if for example during a home invasion their dog seriously injures or kills an intruder while protecting its owner. Also I am afraid if the person is trespassing into a fenced area- with warning signs- I don't think the owner should be charged.

However this is the only sensible thing, yes when somebody lets their blatantly abused and roughed up mongrel escape from their property and it mauls someone to death, then yes, go to prison.

Also there are many defences not just about on public property, "obvious risk" stands out as a defence to me if say someone gets chomped up when intervening between a dog fight in a park.

I like the increased penalties, but I do hope they get it right.

Don't worry, City of Greater Geelong is apparently waiting on word to include AmStaffs and Stafforshire Bull Terriers into the new laws, pedigree or not.

There's more to this then being said. We wont know what the hell is going on until our dogs are being dragged out of our backyards with catchers poles and sent off to slaughter.
