Face Judging

Some people do have and breed good dogs and win consistently. Some people do have sour grapes, love to whinge and need to be less 'kennel blind'. Face judging does happen I am sure, but not as frequently or to the extent that some people would have you think.

I always remember the quote below by Mary Roslin Williams in her book 'Reaching for the Stars':

"...what the ringside can't see and might not know enough to realise, is that the judge may find that the ringsider's choice does not stand looking into, the basic conformation or some other essential being wrong. ......

Thanks, I loved this.

I'm show sec for a breed club, and I usually put a quote in the catalogue about this sort of thing.

A couple I like -

“An important part of success in the show ring is objectivity, and it applies no less to those who show …… than it does to any other.

This objectivity must be applied to evaluating one’s own dog and to judges under whom one intends to show the dog. To expect all judges to see dogs in exactly the same light and to have the same likes and dislikes is naïve. As much as some exhibitors might not want to think so, judges are human, and they all have idiosyncrasies.”

Richard Beauchamp, 2006

And this -

On Dog Shows

“Who can use the words ‘just a dog show’ when the dog before him in the group is so superbly constructed. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; here the beholder may find beauty if he wishes but he must and cannot deny the facts; the more experienced will like the pretty head, the attractive coat, the lovely colour, but he will know that that is not all by any means.

The framework beneath the flowing coat or the short thick fur has to be correct and that has nothing to do with beauty but the parts of the dog put together correctly, functioning without fault.”

I have always been a que sera sera on the face judging thing over the years and have been watching this thread with interest then just this weekend I saw something that flabergasted me! All the jaws were on the floor along the fenceline as well so not just me.

It really is true and does happen! The part that most upset me was the complete lack of sportsmanship shown as well. If you are not loving your showing and doing it for the love of your breed frankly I can do without you!

note me leaving out the specifics on purpose so i don't get hunted down in the carpark

  Ah yes, I've seen a few showring spats end in the carpark !!!

Always reminds me of the 'behind the shelter shed' punch up after school

The most recent was a gobsmacking display of middle aged women screaming at each other as they hurled their respective dogs & gear into station wagons and sped off wishing each other wrapped around a tree
