Her Majesty Dogmad
Well something in the UK is working much better than here. Population of around 60 million and around 16,000 unwanted dogs euthanased each year. Compare that to Australia, population of around 21 million and around 150,000 unwanted dogs euthanased each year. Something is very wrong in this country and in this regard we are certainly not ahead or better than the UK. Last year I visited some shelters over there. One shelter in Berkshire took in dogs via councils in Wales as there was a loose and unwanted dog issue happening there but not locally. Battersea Dogs Home has a massive problem with unwanted staffies in particular. Right now they are having an issue thanks to Paris Hilton, handbag dogs being turfed out, many are being rescued. Still would not be anywhere near the numbers of dogs being destroyed in this country however.

Loopy Lola
You would find puppy farms in Ireland and Wales mainly . I think one of the main differences would be that pet shops have been banned from selling puppies and kittens for many years now and in my experience alot of English people buy purebred pups from registered breeders or shelters, dogs are usually mainly inside dogs and are able to go just about anywhere with their owners, so are generally well mannered and socialised . The demographics and landscape of Australia is vastly different to UK. Australia has a pet dog population + working dog population + stray/semi-stray dog population. Council and local laws would have an impact on reasons dogs are no longer wanted also (I dont know what the UK local laws / council rules are wrt: number of dogs that can be kept; fines; level of difficulty for owners to reclaim their dogs etc) In any case, I was trying to find information on the dog population in Australia, and UK, when I found this hysterical gem (people of Whyalla ... ) http://www.whyallavet.com.au/Environment/population.html Clinic policy: We are committed to providing a high standard of veterinary care to our patients whilst minimizing our impact on the planet. Our aim is to make a difference that lasts well beyond the lifespan of the current generation of staff at the veterinary clinic. Australia has too many dogs, cats and people. There is a crisis of unwanted cats and dogs in Australia and we urge all pet owners to have their cats and dogs desexed. We work with the RSPCA to make a difference and reduce the number bring destroyed. The overpopulation of pets is a mirror of the human population crisis in Australia. For our childrens sake, we must reduce our human population through birth control and reduced immigration. Steve
Well something in the UK is working much better than here. Still would not be anywhere near the numbers of dogs being destroyed in this country however. This demonstrates a basic difference in start point. Some focus on unwanted dogs and how many are killed but even though I wish that didnt happen I see killed as dead and not suffering. Some people need to focus on that but my focus is on preventing animals from suffering while they are alive . Not just suffering due to rotten care and living conditions but also through poor selection and breeding choices. Every day in England there is news of a puppy farm being raided and the RSPCA over there is hated .When interviewed regarding the success of their licencing system one of the heads in charge told us that people simply went underground and found more innovative ways around it .They felt they lost registration and license revenue and dogs still suffered. in australia as long as there is a demand there will be someone who will see money and supply what people will buy including rescue .if rescue didnt know they could find homes for the puppies born in their care they wouldnt do it. One rescue saved pregnant dogs and whelped over 200 puppies in one year - not sure if its counted that she sometimes makes them pregnant her self and claims they were pregnant when they arrive. Not gossip or hearsay - fact. Word on the grapevine is that another big Asian buyer is currently in negotiation with a PIAA registered agent to purchase thousands of puppies for their pet shop via Australian breeders just as Dan Mcdougall has done - however, they are happy to take them with or with out papers in larger numbers .This will mean both registered and non registered and cross bred breeders will have larger export markets opened to them and still stay with in the laws and within their codes of conduct . you cant compare other countries in ths equation as we are the only one other than NZ where you can export a pup today and it can be in its pet shop or new home tonight - because we have no rabies. There is just so so much which goes on behind the scenes, stuff we havent even touched on here and if we are going to ever be able to bring down numbers killed and numbers suffering we need to share this info with each other and work together under a realistic moderate legal strategic plan .if we keep going off half cocked and yelling all kinds of stuff which is easily disproved we wont get anywhere. we cant be seen to condone illegal or redneck methods or propoganda and sensationalism or we wont be heard . Wow ....so Australia has an overpopulation of people .......that's interesting :D The area in UK I come from Northwest London /Hertfordshire which is a built up area had no limit on the amount of dogs/cats you could keep as long as you didn't have complaints made against you . There was only one council ranger that serviced the local council district and if she found a dog wandering she would usually just take it home !Any unclaimed dogs were taken to Wood Green Shelter and rehomed from there . Not sure how much fines were as I never received one
