Does Anyone Know If I Can Import Dog Food Online?

my dog has a liver shunt and the 2 best recommended foods for this condition are not avail here

ive already called royal canin, can i buy it online without any issues?

has anyone ever done that?i only have a 2.5 kilo yorkie so a shipment should last a while

suggestions would be awesome

I'm no expert, but I think you would need to apply for an import permit for a food not currently sold in Australia, and there is no guarantee AQIS would issue one. It would depend on the ingredients and manufacturing process used. Not really a straightfoward thing to do.

Try the 'can I talk to your supervisor' routine with Royal Canin. If anyone is going to know the ropes, someone there will. But the person you talked with may be clueless.

I think the only way you'll get a shipment in is if the AQIS inspection system isn't working. Not impossible, but if they're using Beagles to find illegal foodstuffs, you haven't got a chance . (Just guessing).

Try emailing AQIS with the foods ingredient list - most likely you will need an import approval. If you send without it will just get seized by Customs.

You will need the OK from who ever makes the product to import to Australia

Importing dog food requires permits from AQIS and FDA if it comes from America.

The process takes close to 12 months if everything is agreed on.

Its not easy, every box must be ticked off.

The biggest issue is tempretures the dog food is cooked at

If your still that keen to import this dog food ask the company what tempreture there dog food is cooked at.

If its under 100C forget about it you will not get permits

Customs have applied new restrictions this year to all dog food entering the country and it's about ingredients.

I think your only option is to go for Hills L/d until RC are able to sort out their formula issues.

Otherwise you may be able to replicate it with a good cooked food diet, but you're best finding a Veterinarian who specialises in naturopathy.

CORRECTION: To guide you in the right direction.....AQIS is the department you need to communicate with, NOT Customs. Customs take care of illegal wildlife importations, drugs, explosives, terrorist activity, weapons, excess currency etc to name a few. AQIS take care of food and diseases, to name a few. Beagles and/or xray technology will easily detect food stuffs being imported. Ingredients are what would be the problem, if it is a problem. Get a list from the product supplier and email it to AQIS and find out if you can import it freely, if not ask if you can apply for a permit for same. Best of luck

Royal Canin Australia do not import the food that we need. It isn't available in the UK either.

I called them and they said they didn't have clearance to import it and it took ages to get clearances all too hard, blah blah blah, go buy the Hills L/D.

i have him on the Hills LD, its just the royal canin is alot better

for his condition. I will stick to that then till another option is available :D

You might be able to get an Australian firm to custom make the food you require, especially if you can find others who need the same.

Advanced Pet Care in Naval Base, WA does custom formulations. I have no idea of their minimum lot size . . . I'd guess it's about the equivalent of a sea container. They ship all over Asia, etc., so if you can convince them that there's $$ to be made, you may find a supplier. I doubt you are the only person who has the problem.

Alternatively, try posting again in this forum. You may find an individual who is happy to cook up 10 to 100 kg of some special mix for you at (wild guess) $5/kg. Lots of Australian dog breeders, kennels, pet-shop suppliers etc. make their own special mixes.
