And another worry with all of these bully breed dogs being handed in by these owners who are obviously not great owners anyway. Will these same people now go out and get a different breed, other than a bull breed? Which breed will they get next? Probably one that doesn't fit the standard. :mad

So, what is next?

??? shame on councils ???

A couple posts have said this. It's a state law. The councils have no choice in the matter. What's the Ranger going to say when someone brings their dog in to be PTS because the Vic state law says the animal has no right to live?

Well said. I dont get why anyone at a council would be shocked that people are surrendering their dogs, though. They should have thought about this when the politicians grabbed hold of the frenzy

It may be that they are poor and have no money to register the dog and are fearful of fines. Could be many reasons and Im sure all of them can justify why they did it to themselves.

What really worries me is that these dogs are being judged by how they look as if no other dog can be dangerous and as if you can determine risk by breed. It cant be long before they ad more.

Sorry but if this is the case they should not have owned a dog in the first place. If you can't afford to register your dog why do you have one? That is a cop out excuse.

I do agree with your second statement and have basically told people that they are being nieve thinking that getting rid of pitbulls makes the world a safer place to live, that their labrador/golden retriever/<insert other common family dog> has just as much potential to bite, maim or kill. People need to pull their heads out of the sand.

I think what some people may mean about not having the money to register a dog, if you have a restricted breed... or something that can be conceived as a restricted breed it costs way more to register one of those than any other even undesexed breed. In some areas it costs as much to register a Pit Bull Terrier as it does to register a frikking car.

Doesnt make it justifiable or right but I can see some peoples reasoning.

Great solution - dump them to be killed rather than investing in training and socialisation. :mad And then they'll just go out and find another breed to give a bad name. Despicable.

Congratulations Victoria.

I also assumed Steve meant to register as a restricted breed, which does normally cost more and also includes the costs of a suitable enclosure, which is around the $500 mark, a muzzle (getting a good fitting one can be expensive) and restricted breed collar (about $80 and they wear out and need replacing quite regularly)... so its not a cheap prospect.

In terms of councils enforcing the law, they do have a choice - reject it. This is what, in my opinion and experience, they have widely been doing, at least in NSW. CO's are human beings too, a lot of them cannot bring themselves to enforce BSL. Ultimately, despite legislature, how effectual any law is comes down to the people on the ground. If no body is enforcing it then state governments are just pissing in the wind (which in another sense remains the case whether the laws are enforced or not).

Sometimes you get the same result cause 'the Ranger' is the APO, but also has to enforce fire regs and verge planting restrictions, do inspections on fence/boundary complaints, deal with illegal dumping of rubbish, and do a hundred other things. When/where I lived in WA, the pay for Rangers wasn't good, and the turnover was high. Most of the staff had only been on for a year or two. Are such people going to get a thrill out of one more set of laws to enforce, especially where it risks stepping into conflict situations? Bet your boots, they'll avoid it. Unless the Council actively pushes, and puts some $$$ behind the push, there's a good chance the laws will be ignored.

Slightly ot, but does anyone have any accurate up to date stats on which breeds are highest for dog bites?

I had a lady run over to me yesterday to shoo away her dog from my BT ( who was onlead), she told me my BT had lockjaw and was dangerous, as she had been hearing lots on the news. :(

I did say she didn't seem bothered about her dog saying hello to my cattle dog, who was more likely to take offence to her dog rushing upto him, but she wouldn't have it.

I could really do with a good factual comeback!

I agree. And they will buy a dog that doesn't fit the Standard, deliberately, so people with dogs that are totally safe from this madness need to worry for the future. They need to worry a lot I think.

And what does the government say?

22) My dog is a restricted breed dog and I have decided to no longer keep it?

Take the dog to your veterinary practitioner for advice and assistance for its euthanasia and disposal. Alternately, you can surrender the dog to the Council who will arrange for its disposal.

It's just a mass slaughter of dogs. Lo Pans right councils DO have the right to reject the laws. I bet the smug ignorant arses down here at Geelong Animal Welfare must think they're doing a community service mass murdering.

This is a bloody horrific mess. I'm embaressed to live in this country. We can NEVER complain about other countries welfare standards for animals after this.
