Melbourne hockey players attacked by dog

Mon, 05 Sep, 12:00 PM

Three boys have been mauled by a dog that was let off its leash at an under-15 hockey game in Melbourne.

The boys, two from Altona Hockey Club and one from rival Southern United, were bitten while warming up at Kingston Health Reserve on Friday night, The Age reports.

The boys suffered wounds to their legs but were able to take part in the game.

Phil Patterson, a parent who was acting as Altona's team manager, said the boys "tried to play it cool, but it was a bit of a shock".

"You expect to be hit playing hockey, but you don't expect to be bitten by dogs," Mr Patterson told the newspaper.

He said no one at the club was able to tell what kind of dog was behind the attack but the club would most likely inform Kingston Council of the incident.

The attack follows the Victorian government’s vow to crack down on dangerous dogs after four-year-old Ayen Chol was mauled to death by a pitbull last month.

EtA.: Thanks GT :), ive updated the link to the non mobile version of the site now.

*sigh* and again with the adding on of that poor girl, Im sure her family are going to want her death brought up every time any dog bite related story comes up... Are we going to have this after a years worth of dog stories "..this follows the attack on Ayen 12 months ago.." very sad.

And :mad at whoever brought this dog to the game and let it off! How stupid are people really! Couldn't Identify the breed? probably means that it wasn't a "pit bull" and not something that could be sensationalised. Quite likely to have been a herding breed that wanted to chase and nip at a whole bunch of people running around like just about any overly excited off lead dog untrained of course. Such stupid people... Good ont he kids for carrying on and still playing their game though! Hope they are okay and who ever owns the dog gets punished.
