bonniek Posted September 2, 2011 Share Posted September 2, 2011 So often we have had to deal with small dogs offlead, most are running at us barking, wanting to take my two onlead larger breed dogs on Which brings me to the reason I am sharing my experience today......... This morning two gentleman with their small offlead dogs were fishing and enjoying this beautiful weather, respected myself and my two furkids and gave us the oppurtunity also to enjoy the lovely environment that we live in. We did't have to deal with small dogs rushing at us. A BIG BIG THANK YOU!!!!! IT was lovely. Guest donatella Posted September 2, 2011 Share Posted September 2, 2011 how funny that a large dog owner gets worried by smaller breeds, for me it is the opposite way around, i took my pomeranian to a dog park and 2 big huskies came charging towards her, the owners just said "oh they wont hurt her", she was at my feet screaming and crying. so i guess it works both ways, however i am much more aware of bigger dogs that can kill a small dog in one bite off leash, at least you have the comfort that your dog would survive a small dog attack. i also know of a small terrier who had her leg ripped off by a large dog when being walked by the child owner. devastating. Thats why I shared my experience......it does work both ways, I have two huskies that have a very high prey drive, and one has been rushed at numerous times by smaller breed which he has become quite reactive to. The reason for the big thank you !!! And I would never let them off leash knowing the potential danger around smaller dogs, that is insane you had to deal with that! I worry that after a dozen attacks by small, loose, aggressive dogs, mine will quite reasonably stop tolerating it and defend themselves - that's what I am trying to avoid. No matter how well I socialise my friendly large dogs with well mannered, polite small dogs, it can all get undone by attacks on the street. It's not funny having a couple of big dogs on-lead when they are being attacked by anything, it ruins a walk and risks a fall, and one small aggressor felt a hard kick in the ribs recently from me when they refused to heed my yells at them. I know it's far worse to have a small dog attacked by a large one, and I do feel for the owners of small dogs, very much so. He had a large breed dog and they were playing fetch or something when we came, he quickly clipped his dog. I took Charlie and Emmy away from him, and he called out 'Is it ok if he can let his GSD off leash?' and I replied 'It's an off leash park' not realising why he asked that till later on. My 2 played around at the beach and left them alone, he played on the other side with his dog and left my 2 alone. It was a very peaceful and fun afternoon for humans and dogs :D When he was leaving, he walked passed and thanked me. I was stunned and I thanked him too. I got to pat his dogs and he pat mine, our dogs all said hello and then we said bye. One boy about 4 screamed 'doggies' and I overheard the grandmum say - dont just rush up but wait here and ask the owner first if you can pat them Good work grandmum! How terrifying for her - I travel across suburbs to take my small dog to a park that has separate areas for large and small dogs - its just not worth the risk. I would never take him to an off leash open dog park. In my area the only dogs I see being walked regularly off leash are large dogs - husky, rotty cross and another staffy type cross. In fact, Charlie, kind of find other little dogs really annoying and rather hang out with the big guys. My fella has attitude... he gives one look to a big dog, and they back off from him. One growl and they stay well away from him. He isn't the kind of dog who will rush another big dog, he was taught manners and how to greet other dogs. It's all depends on how you socialise and train them, and with who. If you over protect your little one, that teaches them to be scared of things and makes matter worst. Fortunately so far they are usually far enough away not to be a danger and I don't know where they come from or I would report them. yep, it was the first time i'd ever taken her to an open leash park and she was on a leash because i dont want to take her off leash until we've been to obedience school (starts next month) and she confidently obeys my commands. i was wearing sunnies at the time but i had tears well up in my eye as they came charging, caught me by surprise too. to my little 2.8kg dog 2 big fully grown huskies coming at her freaked her out, we haven't been back that park. i'm going to take her to new farm park here in brisbane over the weekend as apparently there are a lot more smaller dogs, or 'apartment' dogs in the vicinity and park. He can be so full of himself... we were at a friend's house one night, and there were several big dogs running around and he was on the couch snoozing. They were playing too loudly near him that he only gave them 1 look and they all kept away from him... he growled at a GSD who went to his owner for a sook. He is only 5kg. LizT Posted September 2, 2011 Share Posted September 2, 2011 It's important to try to be considerate of other dogs when out in public, particularly off lead areas, but so often the problem lies in people having a nice time and not being fully aware of their surroundings and the coming and going of others, large and small. So many people think "Off lead' mean "free for all". It doesn't mean all the dogs MUST play with each other and jump on every person there!!! This is where these stories make you feel good because these people ARE being aware and it makes it so much nicer for all creatures, great and small.
