I asked this question inside the Waiting for a Puppy thread...but it's a long thread and my post has been swallowed up.

My favourite names for a female dog are Emmylou, Scarlet and Clementine. Do you think three syllable names are too long for a dog? I know someone with a mixed breed dog called Matthew Arnold (the dog, not the person). I think this is funny, but is it too confusing for the dog? Peope are always going on about how dogs should have one or two syllable names.

I know of a Pug called Barry! I laughed my head off when I first heard it.

Dogs don't care what you call them. They largely go by the tone of your voice at any rate I think and the sound of the whole word.

LOL Barry! How awful! I'm still laughing!

I LOVE Barry as a name! But I would probably end up calling the dog Bazza.....hmm, Bazza and Shazza works for me.

One of our recent fosters (RIP due to tumour) was named Dave Buzzard The Rockstar aka Buzz for short. Dave Buzzard is a ficticious character of course, but we had another one named Stanley or Stan the Man (after Paul Stanley from KISS). We had a Jovi too and a couple of others that I can't recall just at the moment.

It's only fair we explored other musical genre's given we had Kenny, Tammy and Reba

One of the most handsome and lovely red ACD's I ever fostered I named Cecil (Cec) and his adoptive owners kept his name because it suited him perfectly.

My own dogs were/are Sheila (Sheil), Trevor (Trev), Mick and Lena.

S

I'm also considering a rock star name like Hendrix or Zeppelin.

Zero is actually "Zero Amadeus Apollo" which he gets when he's been or about to be naughty. Eg "Zero Amadeus Apollo, don't you even think about it!!!"

He also gets Z (pronounced "Zee"), Z-puppy, Z-monster and woof. He answers to all of them without a problem.

Definitely not confusing. You're always bound to make up nicknames for them anyway.

With four dogs darting about, sometimes I trip over my tongue trying to get out the right name in a hurry so it becomes a combination mash of all their names eg OdinRakimTlaloc, RakimTlalocOdin, JavaTlalocRakim or sometimes even OiYouWithTheFur.

These mashups are all multiple syllables but they do respond when I eventually get their name out! Then again they also respond to Monster, Furball, Excuse Me and my favourite DontEvenThinkAboutIt.

Your dogs' names sound like characters on Star Wars. I like the name Ewok, but I think it's more suited to a Pug than a Lab.

Agree that whatever name you choose, your dog will end up with quite a few variants - depending partly on what they've just done or are about to do.

Consider that if you're thinkiing about getting involved in dog sports, particularly agility, you will want a short sharp easy to say and hear variant of the name - my Kirra's agility emergency/quick response name is Kiz. The short name becomes the emergency name because you will heavily reward fast responses to it. :D

my little guy's name is Paddington, partly because I liked it and partly because we picked him up from the airport when he arrived which reminded me of the Paddington Bear story! He answers to it easily, although I do tend to call him Pad or Paddy quite a bit too, he's 12wks old and having no trouble with it - he knows when I'm talking to him, whether he chooses to respond or not is another matter completely at this age...

I have found Grover's name useful when he is naughty because I can emphasise the grrr sound at the start of it...and it always gets the right response from him.

I have Arella (Bella, Smella, Smell, Blondie)

Moss (Mozzy, Mosquito, Moses, Mo)

Zoom (Booz, Booznell, Boozy [all oo like in book], Zoomer, Zoomie)

Tom (Tommy, Thomas, Thompson, Tom-AArrrse, Arse-Dog)

Meg (Megsy, Meggles, Smeg-Head and personal fave: Megatron leader of the Deceptacons!!)

The Salukis (Moss & Arella) also answer to "Lukis" and all come when I call "Dogs!!".

Any name will be both shortened and lengthened depending on the particular moment that you need to call it out!!

Sonia :)
