Pollywaffle
apparently I'm the owner of one of the most ruthless dog breeds known..yes, the fear inspiring Maltese. Fact apparently. Seriously, I can't really take to large dogs, preferring little numbers. I think secretively I'm slightly scared of the larger breeds. That said, I believe that all dogs should be given a chance..they are what they are, often because of how man had made them.
Dogsfevr
We boarded many Pitbulls with super owners & they where an absolute delight to be around. A number where owned by very high up doctors (certainly very few by drug dealers ) We have boarded many other breeds that if i didn't now the breed better would put them on the "never own "list,Owners who have created monsters . The fact is it doesn't matter if you don' get it,there are many responsible Pit bull owners out there .there are breeds you have listed that many people wouldn't own & have temp issues they just don't hit the headlines. One breed in particular you have listed is well known for temp issues & biting Work in the dog grooming field for a week & you will have a whole different opinion
fuzzy82
Pit bulls aren't really my type of dog, but there are plenty of dogs I wouldn't own or don't like the look of etc, so that doesn't bother me at all. But now that we are getting all these restrictions on them, why would you bother? You'd have to be pretty passionate about the breed to go through all the expense and hassle to own a pit bull. And I'm guessing a lot of the people who would get pit bulls for the wrong reasons wouldn't bother anymore. And I guess that means they will pick a new scary looking breed and the same thing will happen to that breed.

OSoSwift
Because I like the dogs I like. I can appreciate a good looking, fit healthy dog of any breed. A well trained, socialise and conditioned PIt Bull is a sight to behold as well. Each to their own, that is why there are soo many types and shapes of cars around. tdierikx
I do like the look of a nicely turned out bull breed... and would happily share my life with one. That said, I'd be looking for one as a pet to love and adore - not to guard or protect specifically. I have met quite a few people who look for a specific type of dog to "improve" their manhood (so to speak)... it's kinda sad really... *sigh* T. Chris the Rebel Wolf
I'm a firm 'blame the owner, not the breed' in this type of situation. ANY dog that is attacking a person, whatever the breed, has a reason for doing so, often poor (or non existent) socialization. Banning pit bulls will NOT solve dog aggression problems. The solution is better education for dog owners and potentially even harsher penalties for owners of dangerous dogs, though that could be a separate debate in itself. There was a case locally where a lab attacked three people - it's female owner, her son, and an elderly gentleman next door who came to help. ANY dog is capable of attacking. Pitt bulls unfortunately sometimes attract a certain type of person as owners, the type who are not at all concerned with training and socialization. So they tend to wind up in the news more often. I feel sorry for the dogs - I have met plenty of very lovely Pitt Bulls in my five years in the pet industry and they are lovely dogs IF raised well. Ker
I would never own a chihuahua or a jack russell. But there are plenty of people that would and do. I wouldn't own an APBT, but that is ONLY because they don't have enough hair for me - I'm a Spitz fan. It'd be a pretty bloody boring world if we ALL owned the same types of dogs. Maddy
Stuff.. I've written and deleted a few things here but nothing seemed to quite sound right (or Troy-safe). The Cliff Notes.. Your wording is inflammatory and you make use of scare words that really have nothing to do with the issue- "drug dealers", for example. Your "research" could do with a little improvement and to me, your post sounds very short-sighted and misinformed. As far as breed appeal goes.. I guess that's a very individual thing. It's entirely beyond me why anyone could possibly want to own a GR. I'd take a horde of staffies before even considering something with the temperament of a GR but that's me. I have no problem with people discussing breed preferences, I just think it's shitty to kick a breed when it's down because it happens to be one you'd never want to own. Bindo
I don't agree with the banning of selective breeds as I don't think it's going to work, but I do agree with better control of aggressive dogs (human and dog aggressive). And in relation to dog agression, that is one thing that I don't understand the appeal of and why people want to own dogs noted for/bred for dog aggression. I think dog aggression is just as dangerous as human aggression. Invariably, people get caught up in dog fights with the possibility of injury, not to mention the harm to the other dog. I was attacked this way, when walking my dog on a lead. A large dog (breed irrelevant), with no provocation, broke a mesh lead and charged me and my dog, knocking me to the ground. All I could see was large white teeth near my head, not knowing if my dog was being ripped apart. We were both very lucky to escape major injury. Perhaps someone here can enlighten me on the joys of owning a dog that you can never let off the leash in appropriate places, and can never interact peacefully with other dogs, as I can't see it. Maddy
Perhaps someone here can enlighten me on the joys of owning a dog that you can never let off the leash in appropriate places, and can never interact peacefully with other dogs, as I can't see it. I have one of those dogs and honestly, it's never been an issue. She has zoomie time in the larger front yard, she gets interaction with dogs I know she can get along with (other greyhounds, although she also had an ACD friend for a while) and we find other ways to have fun and exercise. It's obviously different to my other dog but Sally's dog aggression (and extremely high prey drive) doesn't impact at all on my enjoyment of owning her or her quality of life. Besides the easily managable DA issue, she's a sweet, lovely girl and we've never been the cause of a fight or any injury whatsoever to another dog. DA dogs can be managed and can live great lives with responsible owners. The obvious disclaimer.. I'd never rehome a DA dog but that is not because I don't believe they can still be good pets, rather, you cannot guarantee they will end up with a responsible owner. Girls , girls , girls, it's not the dogs fault it's the MANS fault is it? I've met just as many bogan women dog owners as men and equally as ugly, the sort of generalization that you are using is part of the problem, you generalize that bad owners are male, the public generalize that all bull breeds are dangerous. Before I lay on the ground so you can all form a circle and lay the boots in, I have met many bullies and find them to be nice dogs. minxy
Err Mervin, no one said that all or most bad owners were male. They were purely giving an example of people they knew.
