I think for sure the Vet cert is the way to go for our dogs who have been adopted and are from unknown parentage. It was worded that the vet must state the breed of the dog. I don't know if they mean breed as in recognized unpapered Breed or what the cross is made up of. In that way it is still so silly like the rest of this. Nobody knows for sure what a cross is made up of in most circumstances. But if the rangers are going to be looked upon as experts in crossbreeds, I don't see why a vet can't be just as much an expert. How dangerously stupid this is all looking!

But, the Vet path I think is the way to go for a lot of us.

I am still shuddering at all this. Well done to all of you for writing letters etc. I will get on to some this afternoon.

A lady we sometimes walk with in the afternoons has a dubious dog - she adopted her from AAPS as a pup - looks like a pig/hunting dog and is the honorary greyhound in our walking pack.

Anyway, she has her own (small) PR company and is happy to help in any way she can.

Obviously she won't want a hundred people contacting her individually, but if you wnat to gather together and come up with a spokesperson/central point of contact - Cosmolo??? she would be more than happy to be involved.

Major, major kudos and thanks to those of you going to the media. I find it heartbreaking that the state government is enacting legislation due to pressure from a tabloid newspaper and talkback radio. The money that's gone into this, the sheer reactiveness of it, the apparent lack of consideration given to the experiences of other authorities in other countries who've tried to enact Breed Specific Legislation and watched it make no difference - it's breathtaking. The scrabbling for advantage of agencies like the Lost Dogs Home is shameful.

Worst of all, this sort of legislation won't do anything to protect children like Ayen Chol. To protect your community from attack by poorly controlled dogs, you need to educate your community in the proper care of pets. Registration, desexing, socialisation, training schools, education, microchipping, a ban on backyard and factory breeding of dogs purely for profit - the money that's gone into this hurried and reactive process would have been better spent promoting those things and implementing the laws we already have.

What do they mean by rear pasterns close to the ground? That doesn't sound to healthy?

I think they mean 'well let down', which basically means short

Thanks Ruffles. And elastic skin. My dog is elastic, he always comes back. This is, well, a bit beyond words actually.

Hmm that standard is kind of odd.

It targets pitbulls, yes obviously. To me it also targets staffy crosses and pitbull crosses that only look like pitbulls.

I wonder what the dog that mauled Ayen Chol looked like? When I heard it was a mastiff pitbull cross, I imagined a large and extremely powerful dog upwards of 45kgs. Based on this standard, a dog like that probably wouldn't meet all of the descriptive criteria.

...I'm kinda lost now.

The crew have just left, and I have told them about the forum, and the concerns we all have. Have seen the standard which looks like an information sheet. Very much the same information that was on the QLD checklist.

I think it all went well, and hopefully it will make sense. Still not clear on what this all means if a registered dog, eg. staffyx, is accused of being part restricted breed. I think we will have to wait to site the actual Bill, and then Act.

Monty was a good boy as usual and so were the others. Didn't get to say much about the crossbreed issue of litters not looking identical, that would have been too long. Anyway, fingers crossed and hope it all made some sense to others who see it. Apparently the other side of the argument are going to have their say, so that will be interesting.

I have directed the interviewer to this forum, dol, as he asked where he might find other views on the subject. I didn't feel as nervous as I thought I would because I care so much about this issue, and feel with the help of DOL members and others in the know, that I am right in opposing this. Thanks to all here who have educated and enlightened me on the subject of BSL and dogs in general. Together with 51 years of sharing my life with dogs, I hope that at least one person who watches the TV actually thinks about all of this in a sensible way. I did mention the Calgary Model and the fact that BSL is not working and won't work.

I don't know if they will be impressed with some of the threads - comparing this to Nazism etc. the media being what it is.

I don't really understand this. It's just written like a breed standard.

"All colours and combination of colours are acceptable, with the exception of blue merle and pure white."

Are they saying that a pitbull cross which is white will be safe?

This legislation is the scariest thing i've ever read. I have a rescue ridgeback x rottie that fits the description far to well (shes small for her breed/s). I could do a dna test and show the council what she is but what about when vic next brings in banning rotties as im sure they will. Do i prepare to save her this time around by condeming her the next?

Its bloody stupid.

My Labradore is potentially a serious danger to children when it is eating. It is EXTREMELY aggressive at guarding its food. If I was irresponsible and let a child go up and pull my dogs ears when it was eating, I absolutely believe it would attack them. In fact I believe it would attack me! Don't get me wrong, my labradore is otherwise the most friendly well socialized dog you would ever meet. But its previous owners abused it, and used to pull it away from its food to torment it, and it has issues with food.

Perhaps we should ban all Labradores as well, hell, lets get real, all dogs should be banned. They are just too dangerous. People shouldn't be allowed pets, I mean what if 1 in a million children is attacked? THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

(Obviously I am being sarcastic)

It is written like a breed standard because that is what it is meant to be...........its very generic but then again when a particular breed gets crossed with so many other breeds then it is a very generic dog.

You cannot malign a breed that obviously is NOT A BREED.....it is the deed that is the only constant in all these attacks.

Unfortuantely the media and Joe Public are not professional breed experts, they cannot be expected to be able to accurately identify any dog. Most would describe my dogs as Mini Lassies... Just as a group of sailors could tell you what sort of craft it is sailing by, I as a dog exhibitor/breeder/judge would have no idea other than it was white and had a sail thingy hanging off the top of it.

We need to educate them to be able to access the correct information and not to generalise. That is our DUTY OF CARE to our animals. Do not attack them for not knowing, that is just as baseless as the people who want to exterminate a whole breed of dogs.

I had a local newspaper interview this morning and have a photographer coming this arvo. Journalist was very good and i got to say everything i wanted to say- hoping it will be a decent article.

My vet is more than happy to write a letter- no idea whether it will hold any weight as yet though.

That's great Cosmolo. :D Which newspaper is it going to be in, and can we view it online? So pleased that sensible people are going public and speaking up about all of this.

Thats my concern too bite me. My dogs are registered and contained so my hope is that they should not come under scrutiny. But what if someone with a beef or paranoia calls the dob in a dog hotline? I have no way of proving what my 2 bull breeds are as they are from shelters. Will a shelter having labelled a dog as a Staffy x or Bulldog x be enough?

A certificate from your vet, stating what breed they believe the dog to be, will protect your dog from being declared a Restricted breed according to the standard that was released today.
