Heelwork To Music

Corvus - Kenz has been carrying injury as you might know from the other threads so her training time has been a little limited - her work as a consequence is a little scatty as she has been spending a lot of time on restricted/limited exercise. I didn't think she would be up to the standard for the level but knew she could work for that length of time so hence I offered a routine. As I think I also mentioned given my normal routine was only 2 min and for intermediate 2 min 30 seconds was more the desired length I re-edited the music only a couple of days before and it obviously contained a fair amount of improvisation rather than it being rehearsed to any great length.

I will also say if I haven't already the flooring/carpet was mega slippery and knowing she is still carrying ligament damage the last thing I needed was for her to mistime anything and things like jumping over the rooftop and sending her around the cone were moves she is normally very fluent in but I also held back a lot to avoid issues with footing. She loves to run around objects at a million miles an hour and I could see that might lead to issues so I was trying to keep it toned down a bit.

She wasn't keen on the standard poodle belonging to the judge that was in a pen near that far end of the ring but considering there was a table of 13 people sitting less than a meter from the front of the "ring" and given her issues with people and shutting down I thought she coped well.

Kenz is a dog who's default reaction to stress has always been shut down and switch off - you might remember how she reacted to you and your OH when we met up at the park that day.

Yeah, I remember docile, creeping Kenz. ;)

Obviously it's your dog and you know her best. You don't have to justify your decisions or how you interpret her behaviour. Everything is relative, after all.

I didn't bring it up to judge you. I just wasn't sure if people realised there was a lot of subtle stuff going on there that was worth keeping an eye out for. Different things come out at different arousal levels. Kivi is rarely very aroused and does some of the quieter things but none of the more obvious things, and he's a really mellow, laid back dude that is hardly bothered by anything. Every now and then he has a little anxiety attack and it took me quite a while to recognise them and even longer to see the smaller things that led up to them. The triggers are hard to pick because his reactions are so mild and easily mistaken. He is a different dog since I got savvy to this and started minding his confidence better. I would urge everyone to look out for these things. Your videos provided a good opportunity to bring it up. Sorry! Totally off topic, too. :o

Carry on.

Meant to ask after you have got your started title, do you keep using the same music? Can it be the same length in time..eg 1.20 sec and if so do re choro the piece or add more into the routine?

Thought that I had found the perfect peice of music for the Goldie, but...........not sure now. She really needs something that is a medium pace that slows down, any suggestions?

LOL well kallistar - the routine Kenz did for Intermediate at the judges thing is the same music she did for her Starters routine in Sydney. There are guidelines for each level based on suggested time. I would think 1 min 20 for Novice might be a little short.

Kenz's Starters freestyle was 2 min her Intermediate routine was 2.5 min.

It is our freestyle that is only 1.20 so I won't be able to use it in novice.

As much as I love John Farnham, I have come to a blank of what moves to do with his songs.

Sorry I am distracted right now as I am watching one of my fave show SYTYCD USA

Hmmm ok thinking on the fly - "Hearts on Fire" - freestanding cut out heart - send the dog around (both ways) - from a distance, have the dog circle it and continue circling it.

Normal tricks - leg weaves, heelwork (LHS, RHS, across the front of you).

You could make up a platform type prop and do something like I did with Kenz and the chimney.

Distance COP type tricks

Nah not this time kallistar - 4 weeks to finish my PhD ready for submission by the end of November and still need to find a job. Not to mention Kenz has just come up badly lame after a walk last night . Poor girl has been suffering the BC equivalent of depression - totally shutting down on leash walks do I tried to make it up to her and take her for a nice walk off-lead up on a brush track with a bit of swimming thrown in for good measure. She certainly perked up a heap but paid the price :(.

  • 4 weeks later...

Small brag for Tux and myself cause yesterday we gained both our Freestyle and HTM starters title in the morning and in the afternoon repeated the routines again. We even gained a P.B with a score of 159 in the afternoon's HTM

But the biggest brag that I have is that Meg who is my friend's goldie that I handle gained her first pass in HTM starters in the morning :)to the music of The Little Drummer Boy and just missed out by a few points for her second pass in the afternoon. Meg is nearly 11 and had just learnt to get up onto the "drum" three weeks ago.

Congrats to you and your friend Meg.

I love how dogs and people of all ages are capable of doing this sport. We have a couple of older dogs (13 1/2yrs & 12yrs I think) competing in advance level here in QLD ..... GO THE OLDIES.
