JulesP
The bile tests have come back and are abnormal but not conclusive for a shunt. She could have liver damage from something like hepatitis or it could still be a shunt. The vet is recommending I go to Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre in Glen Waverley. Anyone know anything about them? The crystals in her urine are not the sort normally seen with liver problems and could just be a UTI and not related. So still don't really know what is going on. WoofnHoof
I don't know anything about specialists in Melbourne but I'd say you need someone who would have a better ultrasound machine to look at what's going on inside the liver, they usually inject a dye and the machine shows up the blood flow, very interesting to watch. Hopefully you can get a clearer idea of what's going on.

Oh Jules I have been busy and not checking-I am so sorry you are dealing with all this. So hard for you. The Specialist Centre are wonderful. They were so good to us and Cindy. So caring and professional the way they explained things.

JulesP
Amber is booked into the specialist on Monday. She seems pretty bright today. Currently barking at me to be fed. I am not doing so well. I would like to know why the Hills L/D food is so expensive too. Looking at the crappy ingredients there seems no logical reason so I can only assume that it is to take advantage of people with sick pets. WoofnHoof
Good luck Jules Yeah I agree the LD is bloody exxy, that was also a factor in weighing up surgery if he'd lasted another two years I'd have spent the same amount feeding him as it cost to do the op, crazy hey? Mine was not keen on the kibble so he was going through 3 cans a day! Edited August 26, 2011 by WoofnHoof

sandgrubber
One of my vets said it was ok to substitute rice plus some cooked lean ground meat for Hills L/D. She may have even recommended some cooked soft veg. Post in a new thread with title like "recipe to replace Hills L/D needed" and I'll bet someone will be able to give you a recipe for a substitute. JulesP
I've been to the specialist. Don't really know what to say as they didn't seem to have a clue what was going on. It might be a physical problem or it might be a disease. Think they pretty much listed every liver problem as a potential. They did think it was unlikely that it was a single shunt. She is having another ultrasound at the moment. If that doesn't show up anything I could do a CT scan or exploratory surgery. Both of those are pretty risky to do due to the symptoms that she has (portal hypertension). We went out to the river yesterday and she had a great time and no way would you have thought anything was wrong. She is continuing to eat well. She does have a rash on her belly which I hope is from being shaved rather than an allergy to the food.

The Spotted Devil
That's rough, Jules. I was hoping you at least had something more definite from the specialists. I hope the ultrasound shows up something constructive
WoofnHoof
That's a bugger Jules you'd hope the specialists would have a better idea. At least she's feeling good on the diet, hopefully the rash is just from the shaving Sonny got that a bit too on the softer skin down hear his flanks. JulesP
The ultrasound showed that Amber has multiple shunts. This means that they can't operate. It is a matter of management now, diet and fixing any issues that occur. They can't give me a lifespan. Could be days, weeks, months or years. They were very good btw and spent a heap of time answering all my questions.
OSoSwift
Sorry to hear that Jules, Hopefully it is managed with food and she has a long and healthy life.
