Sir Sniffalot
l'm after some idea's here our bitch had her litter just over a week ago and still has minimal to no milk. She was started on Fenugreek on day two and on day 5 the vet put her on Metomide three tablets a day (cocker spaniel) but we still have no improvement and the pups are being hand rasied. All the puppies are happy to suck from her but still there is no milk.
persephone
what is she being fed?
MissMaddy
Gosh everything I was going to suggest you've tried. Probably the only other thing I tried is that I was expressing to stimulate her supply, but you have more babies than me to stimulate her supply. I have the opposite problem now, too much milk and my boy is getting porky.
Sir Sniffalot
She's getting tinned puppy food with the fenugreek in it, it's the only way she will eat it, chicken carcass, cottage cheese, this morning she had oats made with goats milk and a bit of mince or dieced beef during the day. Tomorrow is sardines and raw eggs for one meal, she is on 3 meals a day and has water available and goats milk with 2 meals.
hilaryo
Before resorting to supplementary feeding I would at least try the following: I would try putting all the pups on every hour for 24 hours minimum. It's round the clock and exhausting but at least you will have done everything you can to build up her supply. Ensure you put all the pups on together and rub their back up and down to keep them sucking hard. You need to ensure your girl is eating and drinking as much as possible while you are trying to increase the amount of milk she is producing. In most cases, supply equals demand and this is the case in all mammals. Good luck Edited: Sorry just realised you are already hand raising so would be even harder to build up her supply from this point. Alyosha
We did five days of little to no milk with our current litter (now 7 weeks) we had to supplement or we would've lost them. It didn't detract for her eventual supply as they still went on her first, every two hours, then topped up with a tube feed. Has your girl retained any placentas? Sometimes a subcut shot of oxytoxin (which is slower acting than IM) can help with any tissue left behind. Sometimes if something is retained, it affects the milk coming in. In simple terms, the body still thinks it pregnant. We only had fenugreek seeds, so steeped them in boiling water like tea, then strained and used the tea to mix with milk formula. We used Palastart Lamb & Kid millk, but anything like Biolac or Divetelac would be good. Our bitch couldn't get enough of it.
hilaryo
Whoops I really did well didn't I! Sorry Sir Sniffalot, I didn't realise how many mouths to feed! Just saw how many pups your girl had in the August thread. Congratulations on your litter!
